I have come across too many people in fandom that fly into rages if you dare break a canon f/f ship--even if it's to pair them with other girls. I don't understand that at all.

Even so, there are some good fandoms out there that support multiple f/f ships.

Fandom in general has a tendency to get attached to things that it ships. I don't see how that's specific to f/f.

I've seen some non-canon femslash ships become popular. Rizzoli/Isles, for example, is pretty popular even though it isn't canon.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that I understand.

I know of a ton of femslash ships in all kinds of fandoms, but I can think of very few canon ships. Lots of "everything but the sex" couples, ie Rizzoli and Isles, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I'm in the "Criminal Minds" fandom and there's no canon femslash ships on that show.

But in fanfiction? I see LOTS of stories pairing off the female characters in romantic relationships. Emily/JJ is one of the most popular pairings, I think.

I think OP is including ships that are teased in canon so much that they inevitably become juggernauts even if they're not and never will be actual canon.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think it might be a recent change. But if you look at what's become big in the last couple years, and the way f/f fandom seems to be heading, it is starting to focus a lot more on canon ships. That is what seems to be blowing up - where it's something that's either canonical or at least actually subtextual, not something read into the work by fans.

It is not an iron rule but ime it is a tendency that definitely does exist.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I get what OP is saying. You overwhelmingly get one pair slated as "canon" even if it isn't (say, HomuMado and KyoSaya from Puella Magi Madoka Magica) and people feel disloyal about breaking them up, even if they technically aren't together. And then you have actual canon pairs (like Korra/Asami from Korra or Kanaya/Rose from Homestuck) where people cry homophobia and erasure even if you're shipping the character with another female.

Overall femslash doesn't get a lot of the kinks and crackfic that juggernaut slash or even het fandoms get. I've only seen hatesexy f/f in the really juggernaut fandoms like HP and Homestuck. Most of the time it's pure gentle lovemaking with very little difference in tropes.

(Same goes with f/f media in general, though that's a story for another day)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have any examples of people calling others homophobic for breaking up a canon pair for another femslash pairing?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have any examples, but I can see the problem some people would have with replacing one canon lesbian/queer woman in a pairing with a female character who's probably, in most cases, straight in canon. Because then you're still writing about the straight woman in place of the lesbian.

I don't agree with it (ship whatever, I say) but I can see it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's kind of a bleh excuse to make, because some 95% of fandoms darling f/f or m/m pairs are generally considered "straight" in canon. A lot of people will claim up and down that they're really bi, could be secretly gay, but they almost always have a love interest of a different gender.

Sure you get popular canon gay/bi characters like Kurt/Blaine and Korra/Asami, but some of the creators will go out of their way to say their characters aren't like that and fandom won't believe them. (See: the OUAT femslashers, the Dean/Castiel fandom, the John/Sherlock fandom...it goes on and on) and even if they don't, more often than not the fandom darling slash or femslash pair will never ever ever get together except in our dreams.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but the vast majority of fandoms just don't have enough female characters to sustain more than 1-2 pairings, so if one is a juggernaut, that's about it. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is an exception - and I note you can already name 2 "canon" pairs in it. You get a lot of female characters, like OUAT, HP or Homestuck, you get a lot of femslash pairings. Even in Korra, Korrasami is the strongest but you also get a good number of Korra/Lin and Korra/Kuvira fics.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
If you're in a male-character-heavy fandom (which is most of them IME), part of the problem is that there are too few female characters to ship :-(

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like those insane Tina/Bette shippers back when L Word was on and still a minor thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if it's that there just aren't as many female characters to mix and match in most fandoms?

I mean, other than OitNB and Orphan Black, not many shows have a predominately female cast.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
What drives me crazy is the preponderance of crossover pairings. I hate crossover pairings (sorry, world, I'm no fun).

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually glad when there aren't rival ships. I hate ship wars.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-05 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
This is definitely not the case in Arrow. Sara/Nyssa is canon (and popular) but there's also plenty of fic for Sara/Felicity as well as a decent amount for Felicity/Laurel, Nyssa/Laurel, Nyssa/Felicity and several f/f/f fics.
