That doesn't change the fact that she was named in Japanese and not in English, therefore her name is Ahiru. Or should 'Usagi' in Sailor Moon have been called 'Rabbit' in the dub?

Re: 21

(Anonymous) 2008-02-26 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here.

I actually really enjoyed a localization of the Sailor Moon manga that called her 'Bunny,' as it is used as a cutesy nickname in English and preserves the pun. It's the same way that 'Damien Shields' makes me giggle and 'Naruhodo' to 'Wright' made me giggle. Puns! They're magical.

Also, you have to keep in mind that every single bit of written information in Tutu indicates that they're in a GERMAN FAIRY TALE, where people definitely are not named 'Ahiru'

Re: 21

[identity profile] yachinami.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Then why aren't we calling her the German word for "duck"?

Re: 21

(Anonymous) 2008-02-26 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, we clearly ALL fail because we aren't calling her "Ente." ♥

Re: 21

(Anonymous) 2008-02-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
^ not the OP, by the way
sammywhatammy: (stupidity abounds)

Re: 21

[personal profile] sammywhatammy 2008-02-26 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the point is that who CARES about semantics, call her whatever the fuck you want and don't lose respect for people over a NAME because it's stupid.

Re: 21

(Anonymous) 2008-02-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that the whole debate is pretty dumb! I probably could have phrased my comment better to reflect that.

Re: 21

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The same reason the fairytales are translated into english as "Puss-In-Boots" or "The Frog Prince".

Because the original Japanese version was intended to sound like "duck" to the (Japanese) viewers. The name had a meaning to the Japanese viewers--there were puns in the show, she actually was a duck, in the first episode she clarifies saying "My NAME is Duck"...

Translating it keeps the same affect in English. We know from the beginning she's "Duck", and she's a duck, and yes it sounds silly because it's SUPPOSED to sound silly.

That being said, I think the OP is being unreasonable--I don't think there's exactly anything WRONG for calling her Ahiru. But there's a reason why it was in Japanese in the original translation, and for those who started off with the fansubs, I think it's perfectly understandable. (But, also, the reason is WHY ADV translated her name, and why I prefer Duck.)

(Even the town's name is shown in German in the anime, and they call it by the Japanese name in the show--since the text shows the town's name in German, but they speak it in Japanese, that only confirms to me that they're all speaking German and everything's translated into Japanese or English for the audience's benefit. Same way Beauty and the Beast is set in France but everything's in English)

Sorry, tl;dr, I know, it's just a pet peeve of mine.

Re: 21

[identity profile] yachinami.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Um, yeah, I know that. It's perfectly fine and understandable if people like Duck, since it's officially like that in the release.

My comment was just a jab at the elitist tone the OP made in their comment.

Re: 21

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't really like the tone, either. XD;; I do admit it's something that bothers me, though.

Although I don't mind as long as Fakir doesn't start saying "baka". THAT'S when I hit the back button on fanfics, unless the writer is REALLY good.

Re: 21

[identity profile] yachinami.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Names are more personal, so there's going to be a preference, and I admit I can usually go either way when it comes to honorifics (and even going as far as character specific catch-phrases), but randomly slapping in Japanese words when there's NO reason NOT to use whatever language you're writing the fic in is seriously facepalm-worthy, I totally agree (and is why I generally don't read fic.) If I want "'daijoubu?! kawaii baka neko?!' he asked worriedly", I'll just read the whole fic in Japanese to begin with, thanks =_=

Re: 21

[identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I actually disagree with people who use the Sakura example to explain why they call her Ahiru and not Duck because unlike Sakura, Ahiru is not a real name. I do realize that Ahiru is supposed to be Duck because she is a duck. I just like using the Japanese word for Duck because that is how I first heard it. I don't think it takes away from the fairy tale aspect whether you call her Duck or Ahiru as long as you understand that it means essentially the same thing.

I just think both names are right and people should call her what they want.

Re: 21

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's really the best way to go about things....

Re: 21

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the same thing. In that case what the heck makes the English one more accurate than the Japanese one?

Re: 21

[identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me perfectly clear I do not think it is wrong that you call her Duck. What I found fault with your secret is that you lose respect for others that call her Ahiru.

Also, you have to keep in mind that every single bit of written information in Tutu indicates that they're in a GERMAN FAIRY TALE, where people definitely are not named 'Ahiru'

But last time I checked Duck was not a German word. Some of the other names like Krahe and Mytho are taken from other languages. Ahiru however is not. I just choose to use the Japanese word for Duck instead of the English word. I think both can be right. Just like if there was a Russian dub that used the Russian word for duck that would be right too (I don't know if there is a Russian dub or not I was just giving an example).

And sorry if I came down hard on you. I just don't usually like secrets that start off as I lose respect for people.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
(OP again) Ha, I'm not saying I would lose ALL RESPECT EVER ZOMG. I'd just probably sigh, and not read a fic. I'll admit that I really love that stupid stupid series, and I just want to see somebody get it in the same way I get it, fairy tale and all. How about this:

I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT SO MANY PEOPLE CALL HER AHIRU ): IT JUST LOSES ALL THE FAIRY TALE MYTHOS TO INSERT RANDOM JAPANESE!

^
with added emoticon, to show I am not an unfeeling, soulless human being! I, too, can create faces with punctuation!

Re: 21

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Although I agree with your sentiments, I do think your secret was worded almost trollishly...

Re: 21

(Anonymous) 2008-02-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
What can I say, getting comments makes me drunk with power. It's quite the headrush; you should try it some time.

Re: 21

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I feel the same way, I pout when my secrets don't get comments. But I don't troll to get comments. ^^;

...I lose respect for people that troll for attention. I'd make that into an F!S secret for the lulz, but there's no point.

Ha Ha that is one of the few times that I would actually agree with an I Lose Respect secret. :P

Well this did start an interesting discussion. :D

Re: 21

(Anonymous) 2008-02-27 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
What can I say, my infant days in fandom were spent creating what basically amounted to a hugely efficient trolling organization for the fandom in question (which is so tiny that to mention it would give it away, oh well). Yeah, I was 12-13, but man it was fun. I honestly didn't expect to get so many comments over this secret, mostly because man does anybody take 'lose respect for' secrets seriously anymore? but the resulting lulz were too grand to pass up.

Re: 21

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'll admit that I really love that stupid stupid series, and I just want to see somebody get it in the same way I get it, fairy tale and all.

I get it. I get all the fairy tale mythos in the series. I still call her Ahiru. The people who call her Ahiru don't not GET IT and I think that's a brave (and baseless) assumption to make. I watched it fansubbed first. It stuck. It has nothing to do with it sounding more like a name. I don't mind the dub, I love the dub. However, why would I change what I'd called her for years? Before PT was dubbed, no one called her Duck. Everyone in fandom called her Ahiru. It's fine to prefer Duck for whatever reason. No problem. But to hold it against fans who use Ahiru is imho lame.

It's not random Japanese though. It isn't even like calling Ed "Edo" or Light "Raito," which I can more understand the griping with.

Wouldn't it make more sense if we were keeping things accurate to translate Ahiru into German?

I can't imagine you have many fics to read if you stop on that...

Yeah this is what I am trying to get across. I just choose the Japanese word for Duck because that is how I was introduced to the series. I think Ahiru and Duck are both right because they mean the same exact thing.

Re: 21

[identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't lose the fairy tale aspect for me because I understand Ahiru means duck, I just choose to stick with the Japanese word for her name. Simple as that!

Because everyone knows Fakir is SUCH a German name, right?
