Probably one of those things where they abandon it for a few months or a year but then return to it. I've done it once before for six years.

I have a friend who has been working on the same fic for about three years now, but in her defense the fic series was finished in he first year, but she went back, rewrote the first part and then set in to translate the whole series into German.

But I don't think it's exactly the same as the OP's case, if the OP is working with the first version.

There was a fic in the Jak and Daxter fandom where the author basically dropped it around.... oh god, 2009 or so? Then she randomly picked it back up in 2014, almost a decade after she'd started working on it (which was in 2005).

I remember starring at my inbox for several minutes, convinced the site had bugged or something.
