Use google, or ask in a panfandom comm.

You know, like Fandom Secrets? If LOTR is the fandom in question, I bet a bazillion people here will be happy to point you to the places they hang out.

Can't you just put it on AO3 under the LotR tag? What am I missing?

Were you commenting on really popular fic? A lot of authors don't bother to respond to comments on those.

Now I'm curious about which pairing this is. There is a large Tolkien fandom on Tumblr, there is The One Ring.net, and there are still a few LJ communities. It isn't that hard to find the fandom. Or you could just post the fic on AO3 and tag it with the pairing.

Generally, the review sections on AO3 are for reviews. Authors aren't going to start up conversations or answer questions like this. That isn't really the approprate place, and a lot of authors actually get annoyed when non-reviews are posted in the reviews section.

Fourteen years? That's incredible to be writing all that time! On the same fanfiction!

Good for you for having some self-respect, unlike most of the writers slaving away at AO3.

So you didn't post your story on ao3?

Because a few people didn't get back to you in when you commented?

I'm not understanding your logic here.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Established fandoms can be tough, and sometimes there aren't a lot of activity on LJ comms, and other places it can be hard to connect.

I've felt that "ur not welcome here" vibe from established (slightly clique-y) older fandoms, so I understand your pain.

No advice; do what you feel is right. You could throw it on AO3 and maybe find readers, though, esp. if the pairing is popular right now. I think alot of fandoms have migrated there for fics, if not community.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Um, seconding Google. Even for obscure fandoms, people are engaging in discussion somewhere. I've found unexpected gaming discussion on rock band (not Rock Band) forums.

Also, I understand the pride you get in finally finishing that beast, but if you want people to read it, you should actually post the damn thing anywhere you can instead of doing some half-assed ransom for community interaction. There might be several reasons why they might not be replying, none of which have to do with excluding you personally. But right now, no one has any reason to care about you or your story, and as long as you keep going the way you're going, that isn't going to change.

But at least your friends like you enough, I guess.

I'm guessing you're expecting a different fandom culture with more closed cliques and to them you seemed pretty antiquated, or at least journal and forum based.

Either the discussion is out in the open, or it has become more private among fanfic writers who became friends.
If you were hoping to be directed towards a pairing skype group you probably need to look in its tumblr tags or something like that.

I mean, it sucks that nobody responded, but I don't understand why you're taking it personally. Did you know these people at all?

There are tons of reasons why sometimes people don't get back to you online - they may be busy, they may be sick, they may have IRL stuff going on, they may forget or maybe they never even saw the message in the first place (technology is not perfect.)

Heck I know for me I get so many messages that I often have to take a break and only prioritize the super important ones. Because if I answered all the messages I got I'd never have time for drawing fanart.

They also may not want to tell a random person where they hang out. It may seem unfriendly to you, or "cliqueish" but they are under no obligation to tell you what they do in their personal time if they don't know you. Try chatting with people without a goal in mind instead, a lot of people are open to making new friends but if you jump right to "let's hang out" they could be hesitant. Even regarding just online interaction, for a lot of people online hang outs are stress relief so they are really timid about who they let in.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the laugh.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Tell the truth, you posted it and nobody commented, right?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
So in short, you used to be a BNF and are disappointed that people don't remember you. And since no one is jumping of joy because you're back, you decided you're too good for them.

That's maybe a little petty of you, but there's no denying fandom in general doesn't seem to have the same sense of community it used to have. How much research did you do on your own, though? I don't know about LOTR fandom, but I tend to ignore PMs asking questions that people could've found out on their own if they'd made the effort. It's nothing personal, I just don't have the time to be someone's personal research assistant and prefer not to encourage such behavior.

Tbh if someone asked me where *I* hang out, I probably wouldn't respond, either. I'd worry that the person contacting me was one of those "bad at boundaries" types and if I told them, they'd show up acting like they're my new BFF when I barely know them and it'd be awkward as hell. This goes double if it's someone I don't know who acts like they're god's gift to fandom.

Your secret is a little... um. It maybe says to me that you might not have phrased your question well and you accidentally alienated the people you were hoping to make contact with. Take a deep breath, use your google-fu, haunt tumblr tags and do a lot of lurking in order to take the temperature of this changed fandom before diving in.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
so you were a BNF who never lost their sense of entitlement, fandom is better without you, sweaty :)

You seem pretty self-righteous. Because a few BNF authors didn't respond to your comments (which could have been for many reasons, a lot of them nothing personal), you decided NO ONE IN THE ENTIRE FANDOM deserves to see your glorious story?

Okay, sure.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I can think of one reason they didn't respond which has nothing to do with the things you mentioned. If they're on tumblr or other sites, they've gotten used to people spamming or trying to scam them. On tumblr there was the fake girl trying to do something for a video game, the virus one with people trying to have you click on ads and so on.

I know even on FFN there were some weird people who'd PM you to try and get you to do semi-shady stuff. In fact, I just had a random spam comment I had to delete on AO3 today.

So maybe you unintentionally came off like Erica the video game designer?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
They probably hang out on AO3, period.
If you don't post there, even though you have a fic ready, you may have come off as the annoying newbie trying to make friends with the BNFs to get cool by proxy.

Didn't you get the memo on FS that 99% of fandom has vanished from boards and public communities to Tumblr reposts and kudos with not much discussion elsewhere?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-06 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Inquiring minds would like to know how many times OP ignored newbies when they were a BNF because they were too busy basking in their own glory and only talking to other BNFs.

Why jump to thr conclusion that others did it to you, otherwise, instead of assuming not everyone is online 24/7.
