I have that experience on Tumblr too. I get a much better response on DA and other art sites. I get way better responses for my fic on Tumblr, but I have a dedicated fandom blog that I can pimp my fic on, while I don't for the fandoms I do art for.

I'm kind of at a loss as to how to get followers, I guess? Posting more original fanart and waiting is the obvious solution.

If you want to build up a following for a fandom blog, follow a ton of the fandom's blogs. A lot of those people will check your blog out, see "ahh yes she is a great source of X fandom stuff" and follow you back. You'll get more reblogs and exposure, and it will eventually reach a state of self-growth.

Yeah, growth and exposure of tumblr blogs accelerates with every new follower and reblog.

Another way to get to know people and get exposure is to add something to another blog's discussion/text post. The person you talked to might follow you back, and if people reblog the text post with your comments, your username will get a lot of exposure while also attaching personality and interests and opinions to your username. Don't do this too much or it might get annoying though.

Definitely true. Adding to people's meta, or wading into any of the fandom's wankstorms or topics of contention can net you a lot of exposure. Whiteknighting for ships under attack, or accusing a ship or character of being abusive/manipulative/unhealthy/wrong/rape is always a surefire way to get tons of reblogs, although the flood of hate probably isn't worth it for most people.

ayrt

I've already followed a few fandom blogs. The problem is figuring out who's actually active in most of my fandoms. (Plus, they have to tag their shit. I dont' feel like seeing a thousand notp posts on my dash every day.) Also, who isn't a total drama llama. That's been my main problem finding DA blogs. Lots and lots of very active, very crazy fans.

Do you do graphics at all? I've found even pretty simple photosets can net a lot of reblogs and followers. At least in my case, they're quicker to churn out than artwork. A photoset that takes a half an hour to create can net a few thousand notes, while decent art that took hours might land only a few hundred.

I don't know how everyone's blacklist works, but I was always able to follow people, and then blacklist their url so I didn't see any of their posts, ever.

Unfortunately no. I'm sure I could eventually learn, but I've always been pretty hopeless when it comes to things like gifs or making text art look good.

I guess it never occurred to me to just follow then blacklist, haha. Maybe I'll give that a try.
