Tiny me had such a shitty taste in anime dudes. Not saying that all of these are shit characters, but together, they make a pattern of whiny self-obsessed and power-hungry brats that I on later «ironic» re-reads haven’t been able to get over. I almost wish I’d gotten into shounen manga later in life.

Oh man I knew I'd get shit for including Yugi in this. I did like Malik too, but he was introduced way way later and he just pretty much replaced Yugi after Yugi had become "tamed". Keep in mind that I've only read the manga thou, and Yugi started the series will killing off bratty teenagers and that's why I liked him (probably).

I dunno why I never liked Kaiba. He does seem right up my alley, but I guess Yami was still batshit when Kaiba was introduced, so I overlooked him..? Either that, or his hair wasn't crazy enough.

Vegeta was my first love and he'll never not be awesome.

It isn't really about any of the characters themselves, more about the stereotype they are molded from. I do think that if I read FMA the first time today, I'd probably still like Envy; he was kickass.

Heh, I used to really like Envy too, but I got over it. My fave was Ed.
I liked Vegeta, though. My fave in YGO was Malik, who... well, he was sort of self-centered, but he also sort of had a really good excuse? I always thought the culmination of his storyline was a bit disappointing; he had a really legitimate reason to hate the Pharaoh.

My CLAMP version of this: when I was 14, I loved all the waify pretty boys, going back as an adult, I loved the manly men. Was not expecting sudden Lafarga/Zouchoten/Kusanagi attraction.

I'm a former Sasuke fangirl and I feel you, OP. I cringe hard when I remember how much I liked him and a bunch of other tortured bishies.

I dunno about the other dudes, but Yami and Vegeta aren't that bad. Power hungry, yes, but they grow as characters and reach a point where power's not the only thing that matters to them.

Um, since when is Yami AT ALL whiny, power-hungry, or self-obsessed? I can't remember a single time when he whined about anything in the entire series, even though he had plenty to complain about.

Also, Vegeta might fit that description but he's still awesome -- a veeeery different sort of awesome than the ridiculous ~omg angsty dark cool redeemable villain~ sort of awesome that teenage girls probably viewed him as being, of course -- but awesome nonetheless.
