Second person perspective is becoming the new "the raven-haired man" for me.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read so much of it, but it's almost an automatic back-button for me unless the writing is otherwise brilliant.

I really, really love this secret design.

It's super pretty.

Agreed. The font is small, but still legible and overall the secret is elegantly understated. Well done, OP!

Thank you! I'm happy to hear that, even if the fact that the font didn't support double quotation marks still bothers me, haha.

I hate it because I hate anything telling me what I'm doing, thinking, or whatever. It just feels accusatory and drives me crazy.

I've read very little second person work (fanfic or otherwise)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
But one of my favorite fanfictions ever was told in this perspective. Honestly first-person turns me off even more tbh and I don't even know why

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I've never liked 2nd person. It's too much like breaking the 4th wall. I don't find that of first person, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind second person as long as it's clear "you" are a canon character and not "you, the reader".

I love second person POV and would write it more often if fandom didn't have such a hate-on for it.

I immediately associate second person perspective with shoddy Reader X fics where the writer simply cannot be bothered to even create a basic Mary Sue or writer insert for their latest fanlove to fuck, so. I guess I feel you.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I like second person, but it is really touchy. I can see how it has a definite "bad fanfic" feel, but some of the best stuff I've read has been second person.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny because I just read a second-person POV fic last night, and I rarely read them. But this one didn't feel like it was talking at me. It was clearly from the POV of a main character. It was set immediately after a canonically-traumatic event, and the second-person actually worked really well for me.

Granted, It probably would have been just at good in first or third person.

Second person perspective is my instant back button. The only time I've liked it was at the beginning of Warchild by Karen Lowachee because the narrator was deliberately using second person to distance himself from some terrible things that happened to him. Once those events were past he switched to first person. And when he finally came to terms with everything that happened to him, he was able to talk about it in first person. It was a neat little narrative trick because it added to my understanding of the character and what was going on in his head.

1st person and 2nd person POVs in fanfic feels way too intrusive for me, for some reason. I don't mind them in original works though.

The only thing I'd probably read it are epistolary-type fics for 1st person and interactive fiction for 2nd person. I could include reader!fics, but almost everything are female!readers (and even if the gender is neutral, it still comes across as female to most of the fics I've tried) that it kinda defeats the purpose of reader!fics if I can't insert myself to it.

Second-person perspective hooks me instantly, maybe because the narrator voice is usually pretty sophisticated in the second-person stories that I've read, as if it assumes, yes, I do have this nice rich vocabulary. First-person is far more likely to turn me off, mostly because it limits the narrator voice to the vocabulary of the protagonist--which, if it's a simple or young character, is going to grate on me.

I haven't seen that much 2nd person in my fanfics, thankfully.

But I've started to feel this way about present-tense. So many people writing it to be 'experimental' without understanding why there might be a point to putting things in the present tense... and then failing completely and getting their tenses mixed up and turning everything into one big (more) incoherent mess, because their 'experiment' is so counterintuitive to the actual story they wanted to tell.

Hell with this, where's the second person plural fic?

"Youse grab some bar stools and order drinks" or "Y'all jump in your cars and drive as fast as you can to the beach".

We (youse) demand satisfaction!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I used to hate it but I think it's like any other stylistic choice- it works in some circumstances where it suits the story and detracts from the story where its use is inappropriate. I see its use in short pieces and have read one good example but think it wouldn't carry over easily to a longer piece.

I used to have a problem with first person because I associated it with kids' books and bad fanfiction, and while I do think it's overused in modern fiction, it can be very effective.

I entered fandom (and fic in general) through 2nd POV. Some of it was shitty, some of it was great. I'll always love it.

To clarify, it was character/you, not you as an observer. The "you" was often fleshed out, hell, even in the shitty ones, "you" had w particular personality!

I personally don't write it, but if I end up doing a Choose Your Own Adventure fic, I'll do it!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Still not as bad as present tense IMO.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, that one infamous Outlast fic was written in 2nd PP and it was fucking amazing. It was literally the only one I actually liked. Too bad batshit crazy (no pun intended) whiny pissbabies ran the author off the internet.

The only person I've ever read who did second person well was Italo Calvino. I highly recommend his book "If on a winter's night a traveler" to all!
