Also saw the terrible joke being presented here and there on the internet:

"2016: Brought to you by GRRM"

I don't get why he has such a reputation for killing off characters. It seems really exaggerated to me.

Well, the whole Ned Stark thing definitely got it started. Then you take the Red Wedding, and voila! A legend is born.

It's the Red Wedding that I really feel is overblown. Two major characters out of a large cast die, one coming back as a zombie thing later, and that's enough to cement the writer as someone who kills everyone? I mean it was shocking when I read it, but I'm glad I read it back in 2008 and not now when all the hype would have had me expecting more.

It was pretty shocking. You may be desensitized to it now, but it was kind of horrific. There was also the bit about them decapitating Rob and sewing a wolf's head on him, so yeah. I'm sure there are a lot of worse things written, but since GOT has gone mainstream, it has the capacity to horrify more people.

If it was about the way people die, like the Rob thing you mentioned that is definitely horrific, I would understand that. It's the people who say that GRRM kills everyone that I don't get. It's not about me saying that there are more gruesome things out there. It's just that I don't think he has killed off an unusually large percentage of the cast and it confuses me when people act like he has. I'm not arguing about how horrifying any of the deaths are, just the numbers.

Maybe because he has a thing for killing off main characters? It's not necessarily a numbers game, but an impact game.

Maybe. That just seems a little odd when combined with him also being known for doing the Cast of Thousands thing. It seems like the impact wouldn't be as big when there are so many major characters.

I'm probably the weird one here though, for pushing back on this so much. It's just that the "GRRM kills everyone" thing is all over the place and it always feels a bit off to me.

I agree, it's easier to kill characters when there are so many of them. However, I really don't think any of the popular characters are going to die. I don't for one moment think that Dany is going to die. Or Tyrion. For all the "anyone can die" hype, it's obvious that there are still main characters with plot armor.

Plot armor or popularity armor?

I mean, "hard" science fiction right now has a bigger body count.

Peter Watts, neurobiology sucks and everyone dies.
Wil McCarthy, solid state physics is awesome and everyone dies.
Alastair Reynolds, posthumanity sucks and everyone dies.

Wow really? Cool. When did that bit happen?

Re: Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it happened at all in the TV show, but it happened at Robb Stark's wedding in the book.

Re: Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because of the Red Wedding. That episode really depressed me - so many good characters gone at once.

Who am I forgetting besides Robb and Cat? I know his wife died but I only read the books and don't watch the show, and I heard they made her more of a character in the show so that didn't mean much to me when reading the book other than adding to the cruelty of the Freys.

Re: Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it was Robb and Cat, and his pregnant wife, and their wolves, and poor Arya who thought she was going to be reunited with her family, and wasn't. It just made me really sad. A lot of sad, all at once.

After hearing all the horrified reactions, I found it pretty tame. I'm probably desensitized though.

Yep, he's only killed 4 book!POV characters out of 24, and Ser Arys only had 1 goddamn chapter from his pov and thus barely counts. It's 5 if Jon is dead (Jon is probably not dead, or not staying dead long if he is), and then JonCon is terminally ill but still getting shit done.

But the fact that 4 of the 5 kings in the war of five kings are dead (all 5 if Stannis is dead) + Tommen is doomed by way of the prophecy has an impact. And major players (non-POV) like Drogo, Tywin, and Oberyn all die. Plus smaller characters in shocking ways- Lysa, Viserys, Shae, and Lord Commander Mormont.

I anticipate even more POV characters to start dying soon. Barristan, Melisandre, Victarion, and Cersei will probably be in the first wave. But I don't expect any Greyjoys, Martells/Sands, Lannisters, Arya and Davos to survive the ultimate ending. Bran will live forever as a damn tree, Sam will discover something important and make it, Brienne could go either way, and Sansa just deserves some peace and quiet (I think Davos will manage to reunite her and Rickon. Somehow.).
