Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently there's going to be a famous guy dying every two days in between ISIS attacks.

It feels like the word is ending.

Re: Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
In a weird way, I feel like I've now become completely desensitized to celebrity deaths, because at least it's only one person dying instead of a massive awful attack.

Fucked up, man.

Re: Everyone dies

Why can't it be Donald Trump, Justin Bieber, or Martin Shkreli?

Re: Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I know you're kidding, but that's a wee bit harsh. Even Donald Trump and Martin Shkreli have families.

Nah mate, they're awful

it is harsh on Bieber though, he's just a dumb kid

adults with serious opinions about justin bieber honestly scare me.

like, c'mon. he's for teen girls. it's really weird when people hatefully obsess over him.

I was talking to my friends and I was like 'So, Rickman and Bowie were both British, both 69, and both died of cancer only their loved ones knew they had. Should I be going through Classic Who actors to check their birthdays?"

I feel like I should be more upset, and it's not like I'm happy about it, but I'm mostly just 'Oh. Ok. That sucks.'

I thought Rickman's cancer was publicly known? He didn't make a big deal out of it, but he didn't keep it hidden like Bowie.

Did you see that Celine Dion's husband also died?

Re: Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I am also French, and we lost one singer (who was also 69 and died of throat cancer, ffs) and a famous actor before Bowie died, so it's crazier for us.

I don't get why he has such a reputation for killing off characters. It seems really exaggerated to me.

imo besides the people who actually knew the dead personally, everyone mourning over celebrity deaths feels so superficial to me.

it's like the classmate who comments three paragraphs on your dead classmate's facebook wall when they never bothered to talk to dead classmate when they were still living.

Yeah but most people didn't spend their entire childhood watching the dead classmate and listening to his words and purchasing media he played a huge part in. Dead classmate did not have any influence on their lives, so when they express regret it's just 'this is how you respond when people die.'

People don't know celebrities personally but that doesn't mean they don't have an influence on them.

I think it's summarized pretty well in this tweet that's circulating FB (I know, I know, but it really is kind of good):

Thinking about how we mourn artists we've never met. We don't cry because we knew them, we cry because they helped us know ourselves.

Re: Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I don't know if that comparison is entirely accurate. If someone wasn't a fan of the celebrity in question and they're suddenly mourning their death, then yeah, I might find that a little odd (though, hey, death brings with it inexplicable reactions and emotions sometimes, so who knows).

But if someone I'm a big fan of passes away, I will be genuinely sad about their death, because they created a lot of work I and other fans enjoyed/were inspired by, work that meant something to the fans in some way, shape, or form. Obviously I don't know my favorite celebrities personally, and as a result, sure, their death won't affect me the way it would their immediate family and friends. But it still wouldn't stop me being sad that they're gone.

yeah, i think you're underestimating just how much of an impact some celebs make on fans' lives.

Re: Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in addition to being a fan of both Bowie and Rickman, I'm also upset they died of cancer. Half my family went from cancer, and my mom has terminal liver cancer. Do I have permission to be sad? Death isn't happy fun party time.

Re: Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that really bugs me is how people seem to be mourning the characters rather than the actors. I've seen so many posts about Snape and it's just weird. I know some actors are known for certain roles but they're not that character; they're a real person.

Re: Everyone dies

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god this argument again.

It's perfectly okay to mourn the death of anyone at any time because someone dying is a sad thing. There's never not something sad about it.

I've cried over the deaths of: people I barely-knew-but-mostly-disliked IRL; famous people whose work brought me enjoyment; strangers from news stories who died in especially tragic ways.

I get so fed up with people claiming this is "superficial" or something to be ashamed of. It's not.

Today I went to the funeral home to make pre arrangements for mom. She won't die for a long while now but I'm her caregiver and it must be done to get it out of the way and have peace of mind. It's so fascinating the process really. There's the flowers, do you want a viewing? Do you want a casket or to be cremated? What type of urn to get? There are ashes, do you want to keep a portion out to memorialize them? They can be incased in a special resin so you can wear the ashes in a necklace or a pretty vase or something. Music? Ministers? What is your religious custom to celebrate and mourn the dead?
