small spoilers

I feel like Rey is just as affectionate of Finn as Finn is of Rey (that hug!), and that they have tons of chemistry.

However, I'm well aware how different people's opinions are about that kind of thing, and that not all chemistry is romantic chemistry.

TFA was just the beginning of these characters stories, so I like that they didn't try to push too much between them in the first film. It probably would've come off as too rushed or insincere, but what they have so far is a great foundation to build on. Whether that builds into a romance or just a strong friendship I'll enjoy it, but honestly I do think that the potential for romance is there. Rey adores Finn, in whatever way, or she wouldn't have been so upset when he told her he was leaving, and even before the whole end section (with the injuries), they had that moment on The Millennium Falcon where they freaked out about each others awesomeness and smiled all dopey and awestruck at each other. IMO Rey was initially a bit more guarded, but that doesn't mean she wasn't just as into Finn.

Do we need romance though? ...not really, but the other SW films had romance too (half that I enjoyed, lol), and I don't see them not including it this time. Leia wasn't any less cool because she was in a romance with Han (and it seemed like both characters had less to do in ROTJ); it just depends on the execution of the story, and since Rey is the main character I have to believe that even if she was in a romance she would still be given plenty to do, and her story wouldn't suffer because of it.

Thank you for this well-thought out comment, especially about how YMMV on chemistry being romantic or not. I was worried about the whole 'people who don't ship Finn/Rey are racist' thing which is why I hesitated on posting this for a while after I saw the movie.

Racism could certainly be a factor with it not taking off in fandom, but for me personally, I don't get giddy and fangirly over friends-to-lovers. I respect its appeal to others, but that's not the dynamic that hits me in the feels. They were super adorable flailing at each other on the ship about how cool the other was and I just, it's so cute as a friendship to me and I don't see it as more. Though ofc I can understand how for other people, that's the perfect basis to develop into a relationship.

it just depends on the execution of the story, and since Rey is the main character I have to believe that even if she was in a romance she would still be given plenty to do, and her story wouldn't suffer because of it.

ITA, just ALL OF THIS. I've been disappointed too many times before and it's left me cynical and not wanting the writers to go there because they so often screw up the chick's character, but if they could maintain Rey as the awesome character she was in TFA and incorporate this romance subtly and realistically, that'd be cool with me.

A commenter below mentioned that it's not that we should have NO romance at all, just better-written romance, which is fair enough. I'd like there to be more of both options (romance + platonic male-female friendships) because my expectations are too high for SW and it can't possibly make everyone happy!

My mind wouldn't automatically jump to 'racist'! Some might, as this IS fandom, but seeing as Finn/Poe is such a popular pairing I think that has to do with the lack of Finn/Rey; I bet Finn's race doesn't even enter the equation for most people.

I don't get giddy and fangirly over friends-to-lovers

Different strokes! I absolutely have and can, but I have to play it by ear; not every friendship is something I ship or see romantic chemistry in. Opinions, even my own, can vary wildly on this matter. (I do however think that in most cases friendship is a great basis for a romantic relationship, even if I'm not into the pairing itself.)

IA with that as well. You (not YOU, general you!) can't realistically expect Hollywood to drop romance because Hollywood likes including romance, often even when inappropriate. Instead of just skipping the romance altogether (which isn't a bad thing in itself, and could benefit some films) I would rather have romances written in a more satisfying manner. Rey doesn't NEED to be in a relationship with someone, but if she does get a romantic arc, that won't automatically make her a lesser character. The writing could do her a disservice, but again, I feel like Disney are going to be careful with what's done with her, and if TFA is anything to go by, I think TPTB can handle it. Make it subtle, make it sweet, don't overdo it. That would make me happy.
