I agree, honestly it didn't feel at all like Rey was returning Finn's feelings. I mean their interactions were super cute, but I was never convinced that she was interested in him as anything other than a friend.

AMEN

(Anonymous) 2016-01-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly

If there's anything to steal from the OT it's the trio's dynamics.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I've only seen the movie once, so I may be misremembering, but doesn't she get a bit starry-eyed for him at the end?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
He took a lightsaber cut in the back to save her, I'd be starry-eyed too.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. They both face Kylo and Finn gets cut down and Rey is of course worried about him. Later she says her farewells while he is unconscious and she goes to find Luke. It didn't feel particularly romantic.

Haven't seen the movie (yet) but I agree with this sentiment.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
She's going to fall for Poe.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
They do have that cutely awkward "suddenly I'm hugging someone I haven't even been introduced to yet" scene in the novel.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
When it comes to Finn & Rey I always side eye people who aren't even open to the ship because I can't help but feel the opposition is racially motivated. The novelization makes the feelings a lot clearer in any case and it's clear that he respects her and doesn't see her as a prize but sure - ok.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
That argument is invalid when the fandom OTP is an interracial ship.

that's quite the jump there. I personally thought their relationship was adorable, but I also didn't think Rey has yet returned any romantic interest. She's off doing more important shit. I'm fairly certain the reaction to Finn's character has been extremely positive, too, so it's a little weird to assume people who don't ship them are racist.

I ship Finn and Rey hard, but I don't believe this is a race thing. (Mostly because, like the first anon said, people have no problem shipping Finn with Poe.)

But I absolutely agree that he respects her and I don't think the movie focuses on his feelings for her anymore than her feelings for him. I just think he's a bit more of an open book.

elaminator: (Star Wars: TFA - Rey)

small spoilers

[personal profile] elaminator 2016-01-15 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like Rey is just as affectionate of Finn as Finn is of Rey (that hug!), and that they have tons of chemistry.

However, I'm well aware how different people's opinions are about that kind of thing, and that not all chemistry is romantic chemistry.

TFA was just the beginning of these characters stories, so I like that they didn't try to push too much between them in the first film. It probably would've come off as too rushed or insincere, but what they have so far is a great foundation to build on. Whether that builds into a romance or just a strong friendship I'll enjoy it, but honestly I do think that the potential for romance is there. Rey adores Finn, in whatever way, or she wouldn't have been so upset when he told her he was leaving, and even before the whole end section (with the injuries), they had that moment on The Millennium Falcon where they freaked out about each others awesomeness and smiled all dopey and awestruck at each other. IMO Rey was initially a bit more guarded, but that doesn't mean she wasn't just as into Finn.

Do we need romance though? ...not really, but the other SW films had romance too (half that I enjoyed, lol), and I don't see them not including it this time. Leia wasn't any less cool because she was in a romance with Han (and it seemed like both characters had less to do in ROTJ); it just depends on the execution of the story, and since Rey is the main character I have to believe that even if she was in a romance she would still be given plenty to do, and her story wouldn't suffer because of it.

Haven't seen the film, but "no ships become canon" is always my preference. ALWAYS.

I've always been all over shipping in fandom, but I really wish original canons would stick mostly with gen far more often. They suck at romance far too much.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
If Finn /Rey did happen, I don't think it would feel like her being a prize for him.

She has her own story and own journey, he does as well. They view each other as equals and are friends. Nothing about the way she was written makes it seem like she was just there for him to win.

Okay but your reasoning is pretty cynical. God forbid we want BETTER romances rather than wanting them to go away entirely. I hope if they do the Finn/Rey thing that it stays subtle and believable.

I said almost exactly the same thing as OP after I saw the film. I want strong female badass character that doesn't get tied up in a romance or love triangle. Can we just let her be herself and not require her to be reciprocating Finn's attraction?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I am really conflicted about this because on a personal level, I ship Finn/Rey really hard and I want them to smooch a lot but Rey is also such a great character and having a lead female character in a series like this with no romance would be kind of amazing.

I guess in the end I'll be happy whether it's canon or not (there is always fanfiction!) as long as the end result is well-written, because I have loved the writing for both of them thus far and I am crossing my fingers that no one screws it up.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
All of this. And I'm not holding my breath, because I know they're setting it up for Finn/Rey, but a girl can dream.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Eh it could go either way. It would be hard to successfully reproduce a romance like Han and Leia's. They had great chemistry together, that I would never expect the same exact success.

That being said, I don't think a romance with Rey should be equated to a "reward for the man". That's like saying women never participate or benefit from romance at all. :/ Not sure if you noticed either, but Leia was a passionate and powerful person and saved their asses so many times throughout the films. My interpretation was that they were more like partners, equally working together to win the day. That was what made their romance so beautiful and memorable, along with the chemistry.

I should think that a man would be Rey's reward for being such a heroic badass. :p

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree so hard. I love Finn/Rey, because they actually have a reason to be. She gave him a reason to do greater things after he escaped the new Empire, he did the one thing no one else ever did in her entire life-something she wanted more than anything-come back for her.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-15 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
I personally didn't see any romantic chemistry between Rey and Finn.

That out of the way, I really want Rey to not get romantically involved with any of them, it'd be awesome to have solid friendships in this trilogy. I don't get the obsession to see ships everywhere. Whether or not she's a lesbian (which I didn't get at all - wouldn't she need to have some sort of interaction with a woman for us to judge that? Someone who isn't Leia?) or straight or bi, it doesn't matter to me at all. I don't headcanon her as anything but straight yet, because I didn't see anything to extrapolate on. if she is a lesbian - good for her. If she's straight or bi? Good for her. I just don't see it yet. And I'd really prefer just to have her be kickass friends with Finn and Poe.

I actually think that Finn will at some point realize that he was only interested romantically because "Oh! A Girl! Oh, she's nice" and that they're better off as friends. Kinda how Luke realized that Leia was his sister.
