Health and fitness thread

What it says.

There's a loop around my neighborhood that is 1.3 miles and yesterday I decided to walk it again after being fairly inactive for months. As I neared tbe last spot where I could have detoured to make it an even 1.5 miles I almost did it. I thought better of it since I'd been so sedentary for so long nd finished my mile+ in 30 minutes feeling great and just the right amount of tired.

Today, my midback is killing me. No idea if its related.

Could be. Do you sit a lot otherwise, like at the computer? Did you do a little stretching afterward? You should also be aware of your posture as much as possible.

I joined a gym! I have an orientation/training session this weekend!

My job gets me a lot of exercise sometimes, but the rest of the time I just sit and the ration has skewed towards sitting in recent years. I was so used to getting the exercise without having to make an effort for so long that I have no habits about getting it in my free time. Hopefully I can change that now.

I hope the gym works out for you!

I'd like to join a gym but I have no transportation. I'd especially love regular access to a pool since swimming is one of the best exercises for my joints. Oh well, one day I'll either have a car or live somewhere where it's actually possible to walk places or take public transportation.

I got a FitBit and I love it! I've been struggling to start losing weight for several years now, and I could never really get going on it. My FitBit changed everything, seriously. Very attainable goals, constant reminder on my wrist, easy way to log food, badges when I do something good...it's totally got my number. I also love looking at my sleep from the night before to see how restful it was. Anyway, I'm down 5 pounds that I know of, because I'm only weighing in once a week to keep from getting manic about it. But seriously. FitBit rocks my world.

Hey fellow fitbitter! (A word of warning if you drive: the first time I took a 2-hour trip on the highway, mine said I'd taken 20,000 steps and climbed hundreds of flights of stairs.)

AYRT

Hahaha. I do drive to work every day, and I sadly have not ever gotten any steps credited for it. I do get a random flight of stairs every once in a while, so I wonder if it's from that?

I ate a medley of broccoli, celery, carrots, bell peppers, onions, and sausage in rosemary olive oil sprinkled with basil for dinner. It was delicious.

I also lifted weights a few times while watching 'Black Sails.' Not exactly a heavy workout, but hey, I'm only human.

I need it to warm up so I can start working out in the morning again. :(

I am trying to lose a bit more weight before I go on my trip. Because I know I will be eating so much junk. Hopefully walking around museums will burn that off.

What easy exercises can i do that do not require stamina and will not stress joints (but will build muscle over time)?

Weight lifting done correctly does not stress joints. There is, of course, potential for injury if they are done incorrectly, and usually the cost of a gym membership.

I would say your best bet for something easy would be to google boy weight exercises and start trying build up your strength that way. Push ups, planks, chair dips... all more or less meet the criteria you're looking for.

I decided to walk home from class instead of taking public transportation the other day. When I got home, I checked Google Maps for the hell of it to see how far I'd walked, and it turned out it was nearly 7 miles! I'm surprised because it honestly didn't feel like it was that far at all.
