Yeah, but... that was the point. She wasn't supposed to be the perfect mother.

None of the Undertale characters are supposed to be perfect. Otherwise there's no conceivable reason to justify the actual plot.

The same thing happened to me, I was convinced she was going to do something awful to me. Though by the end I figured she was completely innocent, I still found her somewhat unnerving. Glad I'm not alone!

It's the fact you meet Flowey just before. He gave me trust issues.

How she behaved toward Asgore at the end ruined her for me, imo. Her leaving originally was perfectly understandable, and what Asgore did was certainly wrong, but he was so obviously depressed and eaten up with guilt by the end that the fact she didn't even try to understand what he'd gone through really bugged me. Even if she didn't forgive him or like him again, I'd at least expected her to respond to him with sadness or pity considering she once loved him. Instead she seemed absolutely set on continuing to view him as Terrible Murderer Guy, no matter what he actually said or did.

I suppose that black-and-white thinking is one of her character flaws, but still. Considering I'd spent the entire time playing as a kid reconciling with people who tried to murder them, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

(That said, it would be so interesting to see her reaction if she were to find out what Asriel/Flowey became and what he did.)

mte. When I saw her treatment of Asgore when she "saved" me from him in the TP ending, I just thought "What the FUCK, Toriel?" At least Undyne noticed he was upset and went to speak with him. Hell, even in the walking epilogue, she makes a couple comments showing her disinterest in him (one that comes to mind is the "everyone goes in the trash" dialogue chain; Toriel doesn't want to participate if Asgore is too).

It really hurts to watch, because at one point of time, the two of them were so happy together, and it seems like the only one holding a grudge about the situation is her. What Asgore did was wrong, but he was too scared to do anything else.

Honestly, I don't really like her for the same reason.

Plus, like, if she had really cared about the kids, couldn't she have stopped Asgore before Frisk showed up? We see in the TP ending that she can knock him out, so why did she wait until know?

I mean, I know why from a story-telling perspective, but from a character perspective I was wondering why she didn't even try until Frisk showed up, you know?

I always figured she's given up hope of a peaceful resolution with him and does not really want to fight anyone, so she tries to protect the children from a distance in the Ruins instead. But that keeps failing, and it only adds to her grief. It's only with the seventh human, where there is a very real chance Asgore will kill them and go start a war on the surface, that she makes herself confront him.

Neither of them really acts rationally after Chara and Asriel die. Asgore gets angry and wants to fight back, and then is trapped by that decision. Toriel is so unwilling to fight that rather than fighting to make Asgore stop, she abandons him and the Underground entirely. Keep in mind he was genuinely angry and wanted vengeance in the beginning, so Toriel trying to stop him by force would likely have been... a lot more violent than what we saw in the pacifist ending with a hopeless, guilt-ridden Asgore.

I get that they were acting irrationally, and I do get what you're saying, but it still bugs me that she waited until the 7th child, you know? Like, even if she was worried about the violence, I don't think she's really on the moral high ground, you know? And the way that she acts at the end, I felt like she felt like she was on the moral high ground, and I just wanted someone to get annoyed about that (even though I will fully acknowledge that that would be a bad idea story wise.)

I have a lot of feelings about Toriel, and the morality of her actions tbh. |D

She's definitely supposed to be clingy as hell, even if it is "for your own protection."

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah this.
And considering Toriel lost both of her kids in pretty gruesome ways, can anyone really blame her.

You should want to fuck your goatmom above all else, is what fandom has taught me. Get a compelling reason to stay in the ruins, you know?

Otherwise, somebody else is going to ensure she gets the BONER.

I'm not sorry.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's absolutely her flaw, and it comes from losing two children in the span of 24 hours. It hurts, having lost people in my life, because it's realistic to me. She's trying desperately to find what she lost.

That and Toby's absolutely playing to RPG stereotypes to make you expect a twist of untrustworthiness. Congrats, you not only fell for it, you didn't learn from it.

I'm not too crazy about her character. I think I'm indifferent at best - which makes dealing with all those Soriel posts a pain.
