Heathers is the most realistic high school movie of all time and I won't let anyone tell me otherwise

Gilmore Girls isn't terrible in that respect. There's *drama*, but not that much *melodrama*. But it's not a show primarily about Rory's HS and HS friends, it's more about her family and Stars Hollow people.

Silver Spoon

Azumanga Daioh

Both get a little unrealistic at points but are pretty down to earth.

LBR here, high school is a pretty melodramatic time for most people because teenagers are melodramatic creatures.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I just want to say that I'd take idealized anime high school stories over the kind of high school stories in Western movies and tv shows ('everyone drinks, do drugs and fucks everyone including the teachers, with tons of unwanted pregnancies and abortions') any day.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
lol, yeah, because anime and manga have NEVER had storylines where underage characters are trying to fuck the teachers

are you fucking serious here?

Who would want to watch a realistic high school series? Attending high school isn't exactly riveting.

Because Western portrayals are sooooo much better.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I think this depends on what genres of anime you're watching or want to watch. I can't recommend you any understated highschool anime, because I don't watch them too often, but if you like paranormal, dealing-with-spirits/youkai shows, I recommend both Mushishi and Natsume Yuujinchou. Both are gutwrenching in places, but they generally take it slow and gentle to get there. I love them both to pieces. Ghost Hunt is also not a bad bet, depending on your standards for over the top - it's high school paranormal investigation with what I think are pretty real reactions, but there is drama and a couple of the spirits are nasty (and one in particular is very, very sad).

It's often extremely melodramatic so much so that it becomes funny.

Manga, not anime, but I like Maison Ikkoku and Yotsuba&! for relatively sane slice-of-life.

Have you read any of Tsukuba Sakura's manga? I wonder what you'd think of it. Land of the Blindfolded is set in high school, and I don't think it's too over the top, but ymmv.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Have you seen Fullmetal Alchemist or Rurouni Kenshin? Both are pretty good anime that definitely aren't cutesy, though I guess ymmv on the melodrama (I didn't think they were melodramatic, but I have a friend who does).

High school sucked for me, so I kinda like reading and watching idealized versions of it. Shows like Kimi ni Todoke and Say I Love You make me feel so happy after a long day of work. I think the only high school-ish anime I watched that wasn't idealized was Watamote. Poor, poor Tomoko.

Here are a few manga that I recall being less melodramatic and more under-stated:

Planetes (hard sci-fi about space trash collectors)

50 Rules for Teenagers (Korean manhwa about a very responsible teenage girl and her family)

Nana (two girls with the same name meet and become friends and then roommates. One of them is very high-strung, but their adventures tend to be pretty mundane.)

Tramps Like Us (...really hard to summarize without making it sound bizarre or terrible, but it's about a business woman who takes in a homeless guy. I'm not very far into the series but I like it quite a bit so far)

Mushishi, Serei no Moribito, Red Data Girl, and most Miyazaki-Ghibli films which (except for Whispers of the Heart) all have fantastical elements, yet still manage great slow/tranquil moments.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
If you want something low-key, I can't recommend anything higher than Mushishi. It follows a traveling doctor of the supernatural. Each episode is usually pretty standalone with a new place, a new illness, and a new creature, and the protagonist and a couple recurring characters being the linking threads. Episodes can vary from dramatic to horrific to simple and sweet but it stays subdued, maybe even understated. Though the character art is simple, the backgrounds are lushly painted, and the musical scoring is excellent. I was so excited when a surprise second season came out, and I'm itching for it to come to the US. I want to throw my money at it.

Personally I like the melodrama. I feel like it's an important part of the style and culture of anime and manga. If I want something down to earth I wouldn't seek out anime, basically.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Watch 'Monster'. The anime for people who don't like anime.

Or as my mum says: "I can't believe you watch that Japanese crap. Except 'Monster', that one was good, but the rest is just total bullshit!"

(Anonymous) 2016-01-21 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I love anime but yeah I think I get what you're saying. Characters tend to feel too unrealistic and archetypal for you. Check out Berserk (trigger warnings for rape, torture, gore). I always loved it for the characterization. The cast always felt so real to me. The manga goes on waaaay longer than the anime btw
