I don't know any of David Bowie's songs and I didn't like Labyrinth.

And no, I'm not 12.

I'm not sure if you're embarrassed to admit that you don't know his work, but it's easier than ever to go find out what the big deal is. Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't but if it's weirding you out that everybody's going on about an artist you're not familiar with, why not take the chance to explore?

I highly doubt that (unless you grew up in some kind of underground bunker) you don't know any David Bowie songs. You may not know it is him, but you know at least some of his songs.

I bet you do, even if you don't realize it. Soundtracks, commercials. Cultural osmosis and all that.

I know some songs...but I never really got into his music.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you've grown up without any music at all in your life, I can promise you that you've at least heard covers of his songs. Maybe you didn't know they were originally his, but still.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Guess what? It's OK. That's the wonderful thing about living in a free society. We don't have to all like the same things.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
There is a thing called youtube....

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, same goes for me and I'm 25, though I've probably heard his songs before but never knew they were by him? I've just never bothered finding out since I can't stand 80s music.

And I honestly have no idea why you feel the need to share this. I mean, it's not a problem - I have a friend who went most of her life without hearing more than one Beatles song - but why do you think anyone else should care?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well I listened to Life On Mars pretty much only because I loved the tv series so much. It's one of the few Bowie songs I'm familiar with. But I do adore the Labyrinth.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
well, hark at you

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like Labyrinth, either, but I was a kid at the time and thought it was creepy and weird and all I can remember are those tight pants he wore that made me very uncomfortable.

There's a good chance you've heard some of his songs without knowing it was him, his stuff has been played all over the radio/commercials and have been covered by other musicians.

I love the Labyrinth though but I wont loose any sleep if other people don't.
silverr: David Bowie from 1972 interview (bowie)

[personal profile] silverr 2016-01-22 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, for what it's worth, OP, I've been a Bowie fan since 1971, know dozens of his songs by heart, and I don't much care for Labyrinth either.

I probably haven't heard of any of Bowie's songs so I too definately do not know any and haven't even watched this movie

*shrug*

I don't think you can exist anymore without being aware of this gem.

I promise, I promise, it's totally worth it.

I'm in my 30s and I never got into his music either. However, I do know and like a handful of his more popular songs, and I've been completely in love with Labyrinth since age 8. Magic Dance is the song I listen to on repeat when my anxiety gets high. Don't really know why it helps but it does.

As somebody who enjoys a lot of Bowie's music but hated Labyrinth, half-secret high five!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-22 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I don't know why people are so surprised by this. I don't live in America or an English speaking country, and I don't listen to music.
