Apparently they are literally rewriting Episode VIII to include an Asian female, and to rewrite the Asian female's part so she isn't Finn's love interest. This because Asians dislike black people.

So let's go over this:

- Disney had to take Finn off the posters and out of the trailers in Asia because Asians don't like black people. Despite this effort, TFA underperformed in China (for obvious reasons)

- Disney had to create a narrative that the Chinese underperformance was due to Asia never hearing/knowing about Star Wars until a few weeks ago. (False)

- TFA sacrifices being number one all time movie due to Asians rejection of Finn.

-Episode VIII was scheduled to move forward with Bel Powley or Gugu Mbath-Raw. However, when the Chinese numbers came in flat, Dodney decided to dump those actresses and to rewrote the part for an Asian.

- However, because the part was for Finn's love interest, they now have to rewrite the entire script because Asia will not tolerate an Asian female getting with the black guy

- The movie is pushed back 6 months, possibly more.

Thoughts? On the one hand I'm very happy about the Asian female character, Hollywood needs more Asian representation buuuuut on the other hand I'm not sure rewriting the script to pander to a racist country is a good idea.

Well, it probably is china. I mean, as the asian markets go, it's the largest one.

It being the largest market doesn't mean you should conflate it with all of Asia.

These don't add up. Who prompted the addition of the Asian female character in the first place? And if Disney already knows China is so racist, why would they originally write her as Finn's love interest? I'll buy the parts about China's reaction to Finn but tying it in to the surprise mysterious rewrites sounds like made-up hype.

It sounds like OP's narrative is that they already had one female character, and they had to change her to be Asian, and then that meant they had to change her to not be Finn's love interest.

It's still kind of kooky (if nothing else - why not just add another character?) but that's their story.

Or just pull a Phasma and change a part that was originally written for a male and make it a female character. I'm also confused why OP claims the part has to be rewritten specifically because the character is Asian instead of black. Like...it's set in a fantasy galaxy I'm pretty sure earth standards of race and gender politics don't apply.

Yeah, citations need to be added. Cause this is kind of...crazy. Though I DO know about China's stupidity over the poster, so that bit's true.

Did it really underperform in China? An earlier PR release said that it started out strong.

I'd like to believe most of this is not true, but honestly... I've read blog entries of black people that spend time on asian countries, so I can't help but think there might be some truth to this. :^/

There's undeniable racism in China and other Asian countries, yes, but it's hard to swallow OP's claims when there's far more reasonable, evidence-based claims for why Star Wars wasn't a smashing success in China.

Specifically, probably not. But there's also evidence that it might have been a factor, given accounts of black people who travel to asia and the poster thing with Disney.

I guess I do prefer thinking OP is oversimplifying this though, rather than think everyone in china has the same backward views.

TFA had a great opening weekend in China and has surpassed $100 million in ticket sales there.

Based on that alone, I rather strongly doubt the veracity of the rest of your post.

Yeah, I mean I've seen some seriously WTF stereotypes held by Chinese people (specifically Chinese people although I'm sure Koreans and Japanese people are also weird), but when it comes to specific black people, especially famous black people, I kind of doubt it. God knows they sell enough Kobe jerseys in China.

Well....no. It had a okay opening (it way underperformed) and then dropped by 72%. It was beaten by a animated movie sequel about bears this weekend.

However, that isn't the catastrophic failure that OP was suggesting, and and there doesn't seem to be anything out there that corroborates their other claims.

They're rewriting it because they want to give the existing leads more screen time. That's been confirmed by every fucking site.

In the hopes of bringing some positivity to this idiotic topic, are there any particular Asian actresses that you would like to see come to Star Wars? Or WoC actresses in general?

I'm sure they're trying to give Poe and Phasma more to do. And they need to boost Finn's role because I still want him to be a Jedi. Hell, make the Nu-Trinity all bad ass Jedi.

But an Asian lady? Yeah. That's cool. More woman power.

Eh, I say keep Poe as the Han figure, the badass normal fighter who uses snarky one liners instead of the Force :P. I'm definitely hoping for Finn to become a Jedi too.

So from preliminary googling and Baidu Wiki, there's not any bias I can see. Finn got a subpage faster than Rey did, for fuck's sake. (Hilariously enough, I did find a discussion site asking if Finn and Rey were endgame, though).

I thought the rumor was that the main characters from VII were going to get more air time and the two new characters roles would be reduced?
