If you could wipe one animal species off the face of the earth

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Which would it be?

Excepting humans.

Dung beetles, or possibly bees. Wipe those out and we'll be out of humans too within two years.

I once saw somebody online claim in complete seriousness that swatting mosquitos was genocide.

That said, probably wasps? They're scary.

Trouble is, there are several species of mosquitos, so even wiping out Anopheles gambiae or Aedes albopictus would still leave out several other disease vectors, and non-vector but still very annoying Culex sp.

Can I say all arachnids? Because then I would be a fearless woman. I can handle all the flies and the rest of the bugs that won't get eaten if spiders are gone.

Pigs. Because then the level of hate crimes against us Muslims would drop like a stone. Oh-noes, you can't eat bacon!! Well, then nobody would eat bacon and then it would be a non-issue.

I wouldn't, because of the inevitable chain effects -- whatever I picked, it would turn out to be crucial to the diet of this other animal or the reproduction of that kind of plant or something. There'd be some terrible consequence.

I wouldn't complain about having a magic mosquito-repelling bubble, though.

As someone in the midst of an Aussie summer, I'm going to say flies.

If one extinct species could come back at the expense of a living species, I'd like the thylacine back please. Those little buggers were awesome.

Spiders. Death to them all.

Bed bugs or ticks.

Nematodes?

If not, than guinea worms (GOOGLE AT YOUR OWN RISK), as they are pretty fucked up, and I think they're getting close to intentional extinction anyway. :D

If not that, than either Wuchereria bancrofti (causes elephantiasis, see above re: google) or Onchocerca Volvulus (causes "river blindness").

Guess who's taking a parasitology course lmao

Ticks, definitely. They can transmit nasty diseases and they don't get eaten by any other animal so they are completely unnecessary.

Only one species? Damn, that's hard. There are plenty of species of ticks and flies and whatnot, so it's not like you'd be wiping any one animal off the earth for the most part.

I'll just say Varroa destructor (aka bee mites) for the sake of attempting to sustain our little honeyed friends a while longer before we eventually drive them to extinction of our own foolish accord.

none of them because there are too many going extinct already and they're all part of an ecosystem that we depend on for survival

Fleas or ticks, as far as I know their existence is completely unnecessary.

the small white moth type things destroying my kale patch.

It's been 2 days, they've hit hard and fast. Half my kale is gone, that's a lot of kale, only the kale, and I expect it all to be dead in another 2 days.

I can't stop it, I've been trying. I've been treating. It's a short, hard and fast battle that I cannot win.

But we will regrow.

Spiders, mosquitoes, and ants. ESPECIALLY the poisonous spiders and fire ants.

PANDAS.

I don't care how cute they are, they're useless, slow, take forever to procreate and sometimes reject their young... how in the hell did whatever it was before them evolve into something to so stupid and useless?

Bedbugs. Tired of them terrorizing people and ruining their lives, and making me nervous about staying in hotel rooms.

None of them, because you made the one worthy of extinction the exception.
