[William Daniels and Alan Rickman]

Really? Most people I saw talked about Rickman as Hans Gruber from Die Hard.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw a lot of Snape but I also saw a lot of love for Galaxy Quest, Die Hard and even Dogma.

I'm pretty sure Rickman was in enough high profile movies that his celebrity went beyond Potter. Unless someone is super young, but even then, it's not hard to catch him in other things.

Omg it was Metatron for me

If it helps, I didn't know who Mr. Feeney was until I Googled it just now.

St. Elsewhere needs to be brought to Netflix or something. I want to see what my mom was so crazy about.

Seconding this! It was a really good medical drama before that was an established genre. I've only seen a handful of episodes as an adult but my mom watched it faithfully (not least because Ellen Bry was an old friend of hers) and it's still the first thing that comes to mind when I yhink of William Daniels.

It was on hulu years ago, when a majority of hulu's content was free. I watched about the first 4-5 episodes for the same reason you want to watch it. William Daniels had a smaller role in those episodes than I expected. And there was a little bit of baby Denzel!

I think it is important to notice everything an artist has done, though.

As someone whose teen and college years were defined by Harry Potter, his death really struck a sad chord with me. I was devastated as someone who remembered him as Snape.

But I also remembered him from Love Actually, and someone reminded me that he'd been in Galaxy Quest (as a Spock expy, IIRC). I LOVE Galaxy Quest. And I also enjoyed learning what else he'd been in. I had no idea, for instance, that he was in Die Hard! (I have never seen Die Hard, from what I've heard it's... not really my kind of movie, so I had no idea.)

I don't think you should necessarily bash fans who may mostly know an artist for one thing, especially if it's crossed genres and/or depending on their age. However, an actor plays many roles, and it just seems... right to recognize that.

I'll always remember him as Dr. Mark Craig, so I hope that makes you feel better :)

See also the David Bowie mourning pulling out images of Aladdin Sane and the Goblin King--or maybe it seemed that way because I follow artists, and those were visually distinctive roles.

(And now, I am a little relieved that fans didn't do a lot of Galaxy Quest-themed fanart for Rickman. That would have been silly.)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, considering his character's big emotional moment in that movie, and the fact that Rickman is dead now....Galaxy Quest fanart might not be so silly. I feel like that moment...where he finally says the words and means them....is strangely relevant now. Because it's what we're saying to him, when his fans think about him.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I would obviously expect the media to list a celebrity's varied roles and achievements when writing an obituary about them.

But I think it makes sense that certain groups of fans will focus on whatever role the actor played that was their personal favorite or the one they most remember them for/saw them in first. I know William Daniels has done plenty of other roles, of course, but I haven't seen any of those other things he was in thus far. And even if and when I do check out his other work in the future, "Boy Meets World" was where I saw him first, so obviously Mr. Feeny will be the first thing that comes to mind when I hear his name. But since others remember him for the other roles he's done, I would expect and hope that those get mentioned, too, of course.

And I'm going to stop there, because I don't want to jinx anything in regards to him. *Slaps hand over her mouth*

I know Daniels primarily as Dr Craig from St. Elsewhere.

He'll always be John Adams to me.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I was hoping someone else would primarily remember him by that role!

Well, tbh, William Daniels I only know for Mr. Feeny and John Adams.

Alexander Dane is my favorite of Rickman's roles, too. I love everything about GalaxyQuest even if I never actually watched Star Trek.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, better to be remembered as Feeny than as K.I.T.T.?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
You beat me to it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with K.I.T.T.?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so glad I am not the only to think of him as the voice of KITT. His other roles as well, but he really had a great voice for that sort of thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-29 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
You definitely aren't the only one. :)

Like other responding to this secret, to me William Daniels will always be Dr. Mark Craig. I think it is a generational thing. For many of the older folks, they know him as Mark Craig. To other he will most remembered for Mr Feeny. And then there is Captain Nice. And of course the voice of KITT.
