[Star Wars prequels, Twilight saga]

Look for fans somewhere other than Reddit, OP.

The repeated criticisms said in almost the same words all the time do get boring. I can usually tell when someone has seen the Red Letter Media reviews of the Star Wars prequels.

But the "vampires don't sparkle!" criticism of Twilight still makes me laugh when it comes from people indignantly ranting about what real vampires are like who clearly don't know as much about vampire lore as they think. I don't know how many people I've told or at least wanted to tell that Dracula could go outside during the daytime.

Yeah the killing Vampires with sunlight wasn't a thing until 1922's Nosferatu. I'm not a huge fan of the elements Twilight used but every creator leaves their own mark (like the game faces in Buffy)

Seriously!

Also, people who complain that Twilight's not Buffy or Dracula...

A. Buffy isn't Dracula either. I love Buffy, but it isn't.

B. The woman wasn't trying to write about a group of lovable Scoobies fighting a Big Bad. She wanted to write a teen romance series with a paranormal twist. It wasn't a particularly good romance series with a paranormal twist, IMHO, but don't accuse her of not doing something she never intended to do.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Dracula wasn't killed by sunlight or a stake. It was a Bowie knife.

Granted, the sunlight might've helped, but I don't know that Stoker was using that set of rules from the folklore which says vampires can go out in sunlight, but they don't have powers beyond those of a mortal while doing so.

Eh, while I don't really care about episode one, I can see why people really hate it.
I always find prequal bashing kinda hilarious, so it never bothered me.
I get why you don't like it, but but people still have the right to voice their opinions OP.

But anyone in this day and age that still does the whole "lol twilight sucks!! teenage girls are stoopid!! gay sparkly vampires lolz!!" shtick are super super fucking annoying.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you. I'm not into Twilight. I was outside the target demographic when it came out, but I can't pick on Twilight fans because when I was a teenage girl, I totally would have eaten it up with a spoon. Because when you're young and stupid, a guy like Edward sounds swoon-worthy, not creepy.

Plus, I'm a firm believer when it comes to kids and reading, just get them reading. Get them to enjoy one book and from there, steer them towards better ones. Kids may be more likely to read books in their free time, if they stop thinking of it as a chore or sanctimonious adults stop lecturing them about what they should like.

This is how I started to feel about 50 Shades. I'm all about tearing media to shreds with critique, but the hate for some things is just lazy and unintelligent. Please stop shouting indignant criticisms posted on the Internet a millions at the top of your lungs as if you just now thought of it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I too find the whole "too cool" attitude some have towards entertainment in general. Especially the whole thing of liking things "ironically". I don't get the point of that at all. Either you genuinely like something or you don't, it really doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.

And I agree with the people automatically jumping to rant about things like 'Twilight' assuming that others will naturally agree or want to jump into a big long rant about it. That series isn't my thing, either, but I also don't think it's worth people getting into some sort of frothing rage about. And since there are those out there who DO like that sort of thing, I'm not really in the mood to mock something they enjoy. I'd much prefer to just talk about things I like with others who share my interests instead.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
"find the whole 'too cool' attitude some have towards entertainment in general to be obnoxious", that should say.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Imo the only valid critique Twilight deserves is it's poorly written story and creepy morman veiw on sex and realtionships that Meyer loves to shove into all her stories.

I used to gleefully enjoy negative video reviews, these days I prefer to focus on the positive (largely due to the advice of creators who I respect). While the prequel trilogy does have flaws I can enjoy enough things in them (and with the fleshed out characters from the Clone wars get into the plots enough) that last time I watched them I enjoyed myself and while I joined in in some of the jokes thrown around the theater, when it came time to boo Hayden's force ghost in Jedi I just couldn't get into that.

Twilight I still dislike, and still think is pretty mysoginistic in a lot of ways but I don't have the energy to actively going around bashing it when I could be enjoying something else.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. I think you're right, and that is as someone who gets sucked into mocking these series myself.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
At this point people don't formulate their own opinions. They hate something because they know it's widely hated and just copypasta other criticisms.

I don't think the prequel trilogy is that great, but they are fun movies and I enjoy watching them.

Though I admit Twilight makes me feel kinda squicky, I know when I was a younger girl I liked stuff like that too. I hate how people try to trample on stuff others enjoy and try to shame them about it. They don't give people the chance to test the waters themselves and find out what they like, they are just screamed at as if they are disgusting. Now I understand why teenagers are the way they are.

If you don't like something or if it makes you uncomfortable then just keep away from it. Don't try to tell the people that like it that they shouldn't. Everyone has their own tastes and fantasies. It's their own responsibility to look after themselves and form their own opinions.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Though I admit Twilight makes me feel kinda squicky, I know when I was a younger girl I liked stuff like that too.

*Nods* Honestly, if I were 13, 14 years old when 'Twilight' came out, I know I would've been all over it.

I agree with your whole thing about yelling at or judging people figuring out their various tastes in books/movies/music, too. I don't understand people mocking things that are targeted at teens. It's like when teens squeal over the latest boy band that's hot, too, and adults have to go on a big old rant about how crappy that music is and how things were "better in their day" and so on. Of course you're not going to understand the appeal of that stuff-it's not marketed to you! And every generation has done the teenybopper thing, that's not exactly a new concept.

I guess I'd just like to think adults have far better things to do with their time than mock teenagers for liking teen-oriented things.

For what it's worth, I love the prequels unabashedly and, although I love the originals, I think the PT are slightly better.

Not a fan of TFA, but we can't have everything.

Depending on how Episode VIII goes, though, I can see myself liking it.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Back when I was wrapped up in Twilight hatedom, I totally fell into the assumption that no one intelligent could possibly like Twilight. This led to a lot of very awkward situations. Now I just wonder why I focused so much energy on hating those books.

Although I kind of think people have a tendency to become too used to the way their group thinks, they forget that not everyone does. So it's not just fandom.

Welcome to geek culture.

It's funny because when the PT was relatively newish there were very few haters; it wasn't until roughly around when the third one was released that there seemed to be some sort of consensus that all three were terrible.

Most of the SW fans I know pretty much flip-flopped in their opinion around 2005 or so. It was really, really blatant.

I have no real thoughts or feelings about Twilight, given that it's no worse (or better) than dozens and dozens of other ridiculous, mediocre supernatural YA romances out there, but I must admit a sneaking fondness for Episode 1. Seeing it in theaters at age 11 was my first ever Star Wars experience, and I can't help having nostalgia about that even if there are a lot of things about the movie that are kinda regrettable. Also, Ewan McGregor became my first celebrity crush as a direct result of that movie, so there is that as well lol.

Kind of related, I dislike the assumption that all nerds like Star Wars/Star Trek. i.e. that NASA post where they're "clearly a bunch of nerds all alone" because they did some Star Wars promos.

Or fanfic, where to show off the "secret" nerdishness of the characters they sit around and watch SW/ST but not the SW sequels because they're True Nerds (tm).

I dislike Twilight because I have seen women up to and including in their 50s say, in all seriousness, that they find it romantic and wish they had an Edward of their own. It's scary considering I've had a similar controlling boyfriend.

I actually liked the SW prequels... but yes, I do hate Twilight.

I stopped ranting about Twilight a long time ago, and now use my hate to write AUs in the Twilight fandom. I like to think it's a few points added to my fandom karma, by finding the itty bitty pieces that could have been good if SMeyer hadn't been such a crap writer.

Example: Jasper's backstory is pretty effing cool... I mean, massive wars between vampire factions?! It could've been awesome!
