Things you assume about authors based on the stuff they write

(Anonymous) 2016-01-28 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Professional, fanfic, anything goes. What are things you tend to automatically assume about writers based on the things they write (petty example:"Coffeeshop AUs make me assume the author is probably a white tween girl").

TIL people think I'm a white tween girl
literally none of that is accurate :(

I hate the word "tween."

I assume that most fic authors who write gay ships as trans*headcanons with explicit sex are just het fans using the trans*headcanon fad to write het sex for gay ships without getting accused of homophobia (the way they sometimes were when genderbending one of the two guys was the common way to get around the icky gay in their fix back in the day).

I just assumed it was people fetishizing trans folks.

Most people writing pregnancy and kidfic are girls between their mid-teens and mid-twenties who don't have kids of their own and don't have any small children in their close family. You can always tell when an author doesn't have a real grasp on child development. Pro-tip: Some kids talk in adorably precocious sentences before their second birthday, but most don't speak like Sherlock Holmes.

I'll take Sherlock!toddler over the 8-year that lisps everything "adorably".

I can't stand any sort of speech impediment or accent written phonetically, but I'd much prefer an 8 year old with a realistic lisp to the infants reaching milestones months before they should. It throws me right out when less-than-a-week-old infants are laughing and smiling.

Depends on the milestone. I was reading by the time I was ...I'd guess around 2 and a half to three years old.

I mean, not reading full sentences, but starting to read words. That's waaaaay the fuck beyond what's normal for a 2-3 year old.

I automatically assume people writing slash fic are female. I've met a couple guys who write slash, but the vast majority of them seem to be female, so I just assume they all are unless they state otherwise.

Re: Things you assume about authors based on the stuff they write

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-01-28 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's a safe assumption. I'm one of like ...three other guys I know who write slash.

I know a few who read it, but I'm the only one I know who writes it. And even that's rare anymore unfortunately :(

Welllllll there are plenty of gay erotica novels written by men.

I'm not entirely certain I would rec them unless you're SUPER into buttholes though. Like really. Gay men, what is your fascination with buttholes? I don't get it.

Honestly, I assume very romantic fics--whether they're het, slash, or femslash--are written by women. In my experience, guys are the ones who tend to try to write more plotty gen fics (with possibly some het on the side) or they write harem fic where a dude is hooking up with a bunch of girls.

Most people who write high school AUs are out of high school.

All people who write college AUs are still in high school.

I wrote a high school AU when I was in high school! :)

Nothing tips an author's hand as being male quite like having their female characters think about their tits all the time.

Haha!

nayrt

In all seriousness, in published fiction, male writers tend to talk way more about dicks when writing from a male POV than female writers writing from a male POV. It might have to do with discomfort on the female writer's part idk.

NGL but the majority of men are completely obsessed with their own units*. I actually think it's why they assume women would be obsessed with their breasts.

*not every man, obviously (I wouldn't actually count myself in this category) but worrying about whether your dick is adequate is just about a universal male experience at one time or another

Thanks for the reminder that I'm a fictional character written by a male author.

It's really obvious when a writer has not had much experience as a patient, either being treated for a serious illness or in the ER. Likewise it's real obvious you don't spend much time with kids if you think 7 years olds talk like little babies who or 13 year olds are sexually experienced and savvy.

Also, it's usually painfully easy to tell if a writer trying to write a queer character "coming to terms" or even facing most non-random-street-violence homophobia isn't queer themselves.

I'm sorry this is totally unrelated, but were you in the SPN fandom by any chance? I feel like I read fic that had your username, but I could be wrong.

I was! I wrote a lot of spn fic in 2012 and 2013; it should still be up. I posted it on hoodie_time. :)
