O God not more Snape and James Potter wank. Haven't we exhausted the subject by now.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
in fairness, all of the secrets this week were submitted at the same time, so

I can't really prove it since fandomsecrets is hard to search but I would put good money on Snape VS James is the most argued about subject in the secrets of this sub.

NEVAR. There will be anniversaries of rekindled wank in 50 years, I'm calling it now.

They all three read as awful, unlikeable people to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like this is a nice, sane compromise, but it won't work because both sides of this argument are too invested in being right.

I'm calling Snapefen trying to sound neutral. Go ahead and hate James, some people just cannot believe that shitty teenage bullies could grow up into decent people but Lily is nothing but a good friend until Snape shits on her and her kind one too many times. If you disagree with that you are a Nice Guy.

My money would be more on him hating James, exclusively, for "stealing" Lily away from him, than on him hating on Lily for (in his mind) having been stolen away.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Just because he's not saying it does not mean it is not present in his character and not shown through his actions. Snape is creepy and the shit with Lil is super fucking gross.

Hmm. I detest--*detest*--Snapefen and the rabid Snape worship but I have to say, Snape never came off as a Nice Guy to me, mainly because of that meeting with Dumbledore on the heath where he was so upset. Nice Guys don't get openly upset, they are aggrieved, they whine, they pose as martyrs. Snape was openly shitty most of the time--the Nice Guy MO is to be passive aggressive.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
If you have Nice Guy thoughts but don't confront anyone with them, it doesn't count as being a Nice Guy.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Nice Guy syndrome is a state of mind, not a set of actions?

Most Snape fans ship Snape/Lily so I doubt much of them hate her.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, it's possible to ship something and hate one of the characters. Fans get so obsessed with their fave character (Snape) that they'll direct any amount of vitriol they can muster at the object of their faves' obsessions. The girl is tolerated so long as she's banging the fave, but the minute she thinks for herself she's a bitch and a whore and deserves every horrible thing coming her way.

See Delena shippers from TVD. They all cream themselves over Damon and hate Elena every second she's not creaming herself over him.

Oh my God, are you serious? There is *serious* hatred for Lily among the craziest Snape fans. It's an incredibly misogynistic subset of the HP fandom--it's *known* for that (they blame her for not taking Snape back after he called her mudblood--Snape's moral downfall thereafter is directly attributable to her, according to these fans). I have no problem with most Snape fans because I think he's a fascinating character, but the crazy ones are awful.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
The whole nice guy thingy is a pretty subjective label to begin with honestly. It's starting to reach Mary sue levels of being applied to everyone and everything.

But on the subject at hand: Snape does have quite a few of the characteristics of a nice guy in the sense of pining for a girl and acting like he is about to say that girls like that only date assholes. But the last part is never said out loud so I'm not sure if that really counts. J
K. Rowling seems to think spending your life pining about one person is romantic so it might have at least been meant different.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I could see how she finds pining over one person forever is romantic--the thought of your love for one person being so great you'd be willing to deny yourself and your love for them? Yeah. That was an ideal at a time (see La Princesse de Cleves)and I can see how some might still find it attractive--form time to time I do. Shoot, I used to live the pining. The torture, the knowing, and the rush that came with knowing the other person did not know the feelings you harbored deep down inside. I have since changed my position, and save the pining for the books.

Both Snape-stans and Snape-haters are just as annoying, no matter who started and who responded.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
"if Snape fans felt it on his behalf I highly doubt that Snape himself never felt this way too."

This is a very peculiar line of reasoning. By that logic, I presume that if some fans felt they were Snapewives, then I highly doubt that Snape never considered himself a Snapehusband. And those who shipped Snape and Harry, well obviously we need to doubt that Harry and Snape also felt this way too, sometimes.

I mean, you can have whatever feelings you want on the topic, but I just find it weird that you'd automatically translate what fans think into what Snape thinks, with no canon support.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's a fair comparison. Shipping (and yes I'd argue that the Snapewives were really just shipping themselves with Snape) doesn't involve the same level of interpretation as observing the characters' motives and feeling things on their behalf. If it did, half the crackships in existence wouldn't, well, exist.

I find Harry Potter secrets some of the most boring. People always find reasons to complain and hate on each other for the most remarkably shit stupid reasons.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
So... you're punishing current fans for something that older fans did.... what.... 9 years ago now? Wow. Asshole.
