I don't read a lot of manga, but I wish there were more feminine male leads in general. I find that SO much more attractive than the stereotypical masculine types.

That's the thing though, you can find all the feminine male leads you could ever want--in BL series. I love BL/Yaoi, but I'm also really fond of het romance that isn't the stereotypical BROODING HE-MAN ALPHA AS FUCK and the woman being a damsel in distress, or maybe she gives up a token little struggle but the ~sexual tension of his alpha brooding man-body~ is just too much and she gives in to his sexual magnetism.

Sometimes I just really want a girl who comes into the library all smudged with dirt and grass from soccer practice, her short hair sticking up wildly in different directions from her sweating and running her hair through it nervously during the game, and the librarian is a quiet, slim cutie with glasses slid low on his nose and his long hair in a ponytail, and she finds that hotter than any bodybuilder type ever.

I would so read the shit out of this kind of story.

I don't pay much attention to anime/manga and am not super into guys who are downright girly but I do love relationships with gender roles being somewhat swapped and men who aren't super duper masculine. I do feel anime/manga does a better job at that than other genres, though, to be honest.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
D.grayman has some very feminine looking dudes. In fact Allen Walker was supposed to be a female character at first and I honestly think the author didn't change him much to adapt him.

But that's neither romance nor shojo.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Is it specifically them looking feminine that you like wrt subversion traditional patriarchal gender roles? Or are you okay with stories with "masculine" looking guys who act outside traditional masculine norms? Because, if you are, I have two recs?

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Hi there! Thank you for bothering to rec anything at all really! <3

I'll answer your questions though: I'm not really into super submissive in the bedroom type guys, which is something I usually see following this trope everywhere. Something about a slim guy with long hair makes people want to insert a femdom scenario, and I'm not exactly all about pegging and domination. So I guess it really depends on what you mean by "act" outside of traditional masculine gender norms, and how masculine we're talking. If the guy is just an emo bulked up dude who isn't afraid to cry, I've seen that before in a couple of the more subversive romance novels in the genre. If he's a regular guy? Maybe. I'm interested in the recs anyway even if I may personally not find them to my liking, I always like seeing why people like the things they do. :)

The two I was going to say were Kimi ni Todoke and Ore Monogatari, though rereading KnT, it's not quite how you were thinking, but you might like it?

The thing is, the MMC in that acts outside of traditional shoujo manga masculine norms, I feel like? Like, it's nice, but not stupid, you know? He's not the brooding bad-boy loaner, or anything. Plus the FMC is adorable.

OM is similar, nice characters, even though the MMC is very masculine looking. (He's a wrestler). But he's kind, sweet, likes to help out, etc.)

I have one that maybe you'd like--
Otomen is about a very masculine looking boy with secret very feminine hobbies. His love interest is a standard looking shoujo girl who is into burning spirit and manliness etc.
I've only read a little bit, but it's pretty cute.

Have you read W Juliet? I read it a really long time ago and remember it as being pretty good. The male lead is very pretty-looking and the girl's kind of a tomboy.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I was about to recommend this since I remembered it from when I was a teenager.

Seconding W Juliet rec for the same reason (also because it's my feel-good romance series, it's just so adorble)

Do you have any recommendations for the few shoujo manga you know of with feminine love interests, OP?

(I like all kinds of male love interests, masculine or feminine, but I agree that there doesn't seem to be a lot of overtly feminine male love interests in shoujo)

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly there isn't much. :( I'm hoping some other people might have some recs! But for now, I really suggest the one on the left in my secret, the manga is called "Tenshi Ja Nai!!", it's published in English and I think there are 8 mangas altogether. The lead is a male living as a woman 'to pay the bills' basically (shhh I know, but this is shoujo anime we're talking about, suspend your disbelief!), working as a very popular idol/model. The female lead (Hikaru) discovers his secret, and is blackmailed into keeping it a secret. There are some moments I'm not fond of (the way Izumi (the guy) blackmails Hikaru doesn't sit well with me since it involves a semi-nude photo), but I was actually really surprised at how this wasn't a case of them just falling into one another's arms. Izumi comes to realize how much he needs her and not the other way around, over the course of them becoming forced-by-circumstance friends. Hikaru meanwhile has her own side story where she briefly dates a young teacher, who is drawn to her despite it being wrong. It's...quite an interesting manga, and I definitely recommend it. :)

Penguin Revolution has several characters who use disguises for work. One of the three mains is a young guy who cross-dresses for his job. It's very pretty and pretty silly.

I have two recs for you:

1) Never Give Up - Mutou Hiromu (manga)
2) Vanilla Ice - Kim Woo Hyun (manhwa)

I feel like I've read others but for the life of me I can't think of any more. Sorry!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Never Give Up looks amazing, am I reading this right, an androgynous pretty male lead with a reverse trap female character to boot?

Kuragehime is pretty great for this.

I'm not really into het myself, but I completely agree. I think there should be more soft, pretty male characters in general without having that tied to their sexual orientation (even though I love yaoi). Especially ones with gentle, nurturing personalities.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. Have you read Otomen? It's about a guy with a lot of "girly" hobbies and a female classmate/love interest that is just so manly. I only read a little of it, but it was cute.

And this one might be a long shot, but it does contain some of the elements you're looking for, just skewed. Boku to Kanojo no XXX is about a girl that's adorable, but has a horrible violent and rude personality and a guy that is just so meek. He has a crush on that brute of a girl and somehow they end up swapping bodies and so now she's the perfect guy's guy in his body and he's a sweet little lady in her body. Looks like it was discontinued, so I don't know if they ever swap back or where that goes.

And another loooooooong shot, Gokusen. It's like Great Teacher Onizuka, with a female teacher from a yakuza family whipping a class of hooligans into shape with her rough behavior. Pretty boy Shin becomes a sort of love interest. There's a manga, anime and Live action version. I hated the live action version, but apparently the romance vibes are more apparent there and it's the more popular version for the shippers.

I only saw the first episode or two of the Gokusen drama, but I got the impression they were actually dumbing down the romance since teacher/student romance is ~objectionable? And they were focusing more on her crush on that adult guy. But I could be wrong, it's been ages since I saw it. I just remember that I didn't like it.

The manga's great, though, and openly romantic towards the end. And very gender-subversive, too; the female teacher isn't conventionally attractive or particularly feminine, and the male student is frequently a damsel in distress and thinks she's basically the greatest person. I wouldn't really describe him as feminine, though, besides being a prettyboy. So it might not be what OP's looking for. But it's still a great manga in general.

Recently I found myself wishing the same for otome games. The sweet, shy, "feminine" guy is always my favorite when there's one like that, but so few games even have a character like that.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
I like Natsume Yuujinchou. Not a romance but the main character is considered rather feminine if you're playing by stereotypes.
