My usual internet hang-out spent the last few days detailing how evil and unredeemable all things American are and I'm kinda down to realize how unwanted I am there.

I admit, I sometimes like the 24/7/365 retail culture, which is not universal, admittedly. Wal-Mart is run by terrible people who pay their employees beans, but it's nice to be able to go the store at any hour for emergent problems.

Having lived in Europe, Asia, and America I can say this:

-The nature and space. The US is so huge and has so much virtually untouched landscape. It's a lot different even being in forests where people have lived for thousands of years. The US just feels so clean in that respect.

-And on that note, the clean air. No, probably doesn't apply to the big cities or whatever, but when I go back to my smalltown home, the air tastes SO DELICIOUS after being in London or Tokyo or wherever.

-How cheap everything is (well, besides college and healthcare, pfft). Food is cheap, including fresh fruits and vegetables. In my aforementioned small town area, housing is also ridiculously cheap.

-How friendly people are. Obviously a stereotype, but I think US culture encourages extroversion and friendliness in a way that not all countries do.

-No TV tax. lol

American comics. American movies. Rock music. Blues music. BLUES ROCK (the best of both worlds).

I've never actually been to the US, I just enjoy your media lol.

-Gay Marriage may not be the be-all-end-all to gay rights but it's pretty awesome.

-Multiculturalism

-Freedom of speech, particularly the right to peaceful protests and not having to worry about censorship in my private life (Obviously public places and jobs are different)

-Media. We have some damn good media.

I like how diverse that landscape is. You can live on the plains, in a huge city, in a tiny town, by the ocean, etc.

Also, food. There's so many different kinds of food, just from America alone, not to mention all the foreign cuisine that's practically at your doorstep.

The movie/entertainment industry. It's dwarfed only by Bollywood, but I'd argue it's more diverse.

The space. Bigger houses generally. I just like having a lot of room okay?

That we're a big country with a lot of places we can move to without having to worry about getting a citizenship or w/e.

The melting pot aspect. Living on a street with neighbors from all over the world is pretty cool.

The way it used to be a culture that valued intellectual pursuits and science. There are still some vestiges of that kicking around, and it's always heartening to think that someday it might make the country great again.

I've only visited a few times but they were positive experiences every time.

- While dealing with retail and waitstaff was a bit of a shock(seriously they were so friendly and it's a little scary when you're not used to that) generally everyone I met was quiet friendly and helpful.

- How big everything is, the size difference with the streets alone was something but pretty much everything was bigger in the US and it was cool.

- How clean the streets are. Where I am while the streets are horribly messy they are no where near as clean as the streets were in the US, like spotless, it was a nice difference.

And while I never went out into nature over there it looks like the US has some absolutely amazing forests and stuff.

--How big it is and how it makes the landscape so different. I've lived in Tennessee and New Mexico and sometimes it's crazy to me that they're in the same country because they're so different.

--The food. Also, the chili pepper is native to the US (and Mexico), SO YOU'RE WELCOME, REST OF THE WORLD. (I had a professor who told me that the US's greatest contribution is the chili)

--Title IX. Every Women's World Cup and Olympics I'm reminded of how much we take women in sports for granted and it's not an automatic in other countries.

--Ice in drinks, do not laugh about this F!S, it is essential and serious.

New York City is pretty cool! Also, it's cheaper to travel around in the US than it is in my own country.

They make some pretty great entertainment, too.

The hope, I guess? Like I haven't travelled enough outside the US to really make any kind of comparisons, but living in America I feel like changing things for the better isn't an impossible task.

It's huge. If you don't like one part of it, there's many places to visit, some of them remote and incredibly beautiful. We have a fantastic system of state and national parks, for example. You can find lakes, mountains, coast, desert, plains, forests... all sorts of different places, all unique.

Food costs are relatively low here compared to most of Europe. It might not always be gourmet fare, but we have lots of interesting regional foods and a lot of places have little mom and pop places that have been run the same way for 30-40 years.

Gas is cheap right now, so there are many awesome roadtrip possibilities.

My favorite thing would be the nature. Forests, swamps, deserts, mountains, all kinds of different beauty and biodiversity to appeal to the eye and soul.

I like some of the unique aspects of its history, and its contributions to literature and art.

The crass commercialism can be really fun too. It's often so over-the-top and cheesy that it's extremely amusing.

I also like that there's a lot of religious tolerance. Even in the Bible Belt most people are willing to let others worship as they please. A few nutcases don't change that.

People are very nice. I've traveled all over the country, from NYC to LA to mid-size midwest cities to little tiny towns in the deep south, and everywhere people are helpful and friendly.

Also most of the country is much safer than many of the other places I've traveled. Some places have high crime, but mostly only in certain districts of specific cities. It's really nice to be able to travel without worrying about corrupt police officers or pickpockets or terrorists or gang shootouts.

My dog is so soft and clean right now from his bath. The first thing he did when we got back was to walk up to where I was sitting and put his head over my shoulder so I could cuddle him.

I would share the awesome dog cuddles with you guys if I could. Everyone needs more dog cuddles.
