St. John's wort

Anyone ever taken it? Why did you take it, and did it work for you or no?

I've taken it for depression. It was ok? Actual anti-depressants worked a lot better, and all the research I've seen says that St. John's Wort doesn't actually contain enough of the plant to be effective. It's a placebo effect. (I AM NOT A DOCTOR TAKE EVERYTHING I SAY WITH A GRAIN OF SALT AND DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH)

Talk to your doctor, whether you take it or not, because just because it's over the counter doesn't mean it won't interact poorly with other medications or health issues, and they may have a better suggestion.

I took it for depression/anxiety at my therapist's recommendation for a few months. I did start to do better, though I don't know how much of that was attributable to therapy and how much to the drug--or for that matter, how much was the drug helping me get better enough to be more receptive to the therapy.

It wasn't terribly expensive, so I would definitely consider it worth a try, as long as you check for drug interactions first. (I had to stop using it once I got on birth control, and my adjustment period there was a whole new bag of crazy, but I couldn't say if that was more about the birth control itself or the St. John's wort.)

Sorry if this is pretty vague and not super helpful?

Actually, yes, what the previous commenter said--do check with your doctor first for potential interactions, etc.

PSA

Always be sure to check known interactions with any medications you might be taking before starting a herbal supplement. Just because it's a herbal extract doesn't mean it won't have contraindications with something else you might be taking.

Yeah, this. Apparently St. John's wort contains a mild monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), which would explain why it works for some people and not others--MAOI's don't work for everybody. But this means that anything that you are warned not to take if you are taking an MAOI should not be taken while you are taking St. John's wort.

It won't be the same for everyone. Check with your doctor and pharmacist to make sure it won't interact with any drugs you're currently taking. Also keep in mind that if you're in the U.S., herbal supplements aren't regulated the way medication is. You have no way of knowing if the St. John's wort pills you get have any St. John's wort in them, or if they're placebos, or whatever. Just a heads up.
