That's good that you don't let them pressure you into sharing. It's about what you're comfortable letting others see, not about what they want.

I say write some horribly stilted and awful smut, post it, and watch the begging stop. Or am I giving fandom too much credit by expecting them to recognize awful smut when they see it?

Yes.

You're asking this in a world that made 50 Shades a best seller and something like a billion dollar movie franchise. Just saying.

This is a beautiful secret. It's got everything: the smug pettiness, the stubborn defense of a weird personal choice "just because," the cross-fandom relatability, the spot-on image. 10/10.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who found this secret smug and petty.

I get this. Once I had a reader tell me they had enjoyed all my stories (which I had stopped writing ages ago, and which they're NEVER commented on before), oh and by the way, could they please have copies of them all in ___ file format? Thanks!

I got a great deal of satisfaction out of saying sorry, I couldn't do that. They'd have to search for and save the stories themselves if they wanted to. Never heard from Ms. Entitled before or since. :P

I can relate, OP, though my thing is that I genuinely don't care about smut all that much.

The worst are the people who go on assuming I'm stuck up, or childish, or mentally challenged just because I'm not perving out online like everyone else.

Good for you.

I have seen at least one person who does the same thing but is open about it - "yes I write it, no you'll never see it" - and they didn't seem to get any flack for it but otoh I didn't see their message inbox so who knows. (or maybe the readership is different for novel-length femslash fics).

(Anonymous) 2016-02-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, those people need to back off. You're certainly not required to put smutty scenes into a romance story, and there's no need for people to get all demanding and pushy about that stuff. Write and post what you want. If people really want explicit sex scenes involving their favorite characters, they can always go find other stories that'll give them what they're looking for. Unless it's some super rare pairing, I doubt they'd have that hard a time finding those kinds of stories.

And if you do ever decide to put an explicit sex scene into a story, well, then you've got the scenes there and ready to share, if you so choose.

But yeah. Bottom line, this sort of thing is your call and nobody else's.

I support your wish not to post smut, for whatever reason you have, because I have grown to not be hugely invested in smut myself and value plot more.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-16 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to write smut, but now I prefer to write the build up and then let readers come to their own conclusions. I was never as comfortable writing it as I was reading it, writing it just made me feel very mechanical. Like I was writing IKEA instructions, only even less coherent. Do whatever makes you comfortable!

And while I think it's just the slightest bit vindictive, I can't really blame you for being frustrated when people repeatedly ask for things you don't want to give.

I don't think I would have understood this before. I write porn, and yes I have fans, but I've never had any obnoxious ones other than one particular shipper of one ship who doesn't like the other ship I write.

But this past week I've been dealing with an anon who is really offended by the idea that a March fandom fest I'm hosting might not have porn as a theme and insults non-porn fans by saying they don't contribute anything to the fandom.

So I get this now. I don't think I'd ever be this petty. but I get it.

I can understand keeping something back because people are being too insistent about it, it'd get aggravating over time.

For some reason, I think this is glorious. It's probably because I can be a bit contrary myself. But I also never get why people would bug someone about adding smut. I mean, asking for a sequel or something, I get. But if you want smut you can get it anywhere for most fandoms, so why not just enjoy the fic you got?

Writing smut can be more freeing when it's just for you.

Also that is a very delicious looking lemon.

NGL, I like the cut of your jib, OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. It always annoys me when people are begging for smut even when the author is obviously not comfortable with it or didn't give the impression that they were ever planning on writing it. It's also annoying when they don't comment on the actual content of the writing, just beg for smut.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-17 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well here's at least one reader who can appreciate a good romance without smut.

But yeah, nothing's more annoying than someone telling you what your story should be.

I feel like non-sarcastically congratulating you, OP, and how you handle earnest but pushy fans. Classy in the streets, contrary in the sheets.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
If you're writing those scenes, that means the story calls for them. And if you're withholding them, it means you're posting your stories incomplete. So no wonder your commenters are complaining?
