I never watched this show, but wasn't she abusive towards him?

She was, but in that kid's show, Helga Pataki way where it's 'funny' because she's a girl. So it absolutely reads as abuse, but the show did not realize that.

TBH from what I've heard and seen of this show, both Carly and Sam come off as absolutes dicks at times. In my opinion.

Yes; she was kind of a bully in general but the show didn't really acknowledge it

Oh God, Seddie's relationship arc for those few episodes was an out of character trainwreck. They treated their friends terribly during it (poor Gibby and Carly). It just made me loathe the pairing even more than I already did.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that Carly? Not at all how I pictured her when I heard of the show way back when.

I never cared for how active Dan was in fan circles, myself.

I wasn't super active within the fandom when it was airing, but the secrets I'd see about him being overly involved on websites for the show really irked me. I'm very much fandom is for the fans, so when creators get involved I don't care for it.

Also, he seemed like such a jackass who enjoyed riling up the shippers and fanning the flames of ship wars.

That said, I never did see the show to the end, so now I guess I don't have to. Carly & Freddie really didn't have romantic chemistry, imo.

He got really weird with shippers. There was an entire anti-shipping episode that I purposefully avoided. I get the feeling that Creddie only happened in the end because A) Hero gets the girl and B) Seddie fans kind of revolted after the breakup and I think that soured him on the ship.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ew wait what, Dan Snider was involved in the fandom? This really weirds me out because I distinctly remember not even really getting into fandom much in the first place because I felt out of place as an adult when it was mainly like 12-16 year old girls (and some guys) who were totally into it. I find it honestly kind of creepy that the showrunner would not only participate in the fandom but do it in a way that is obnoxious and disgusting and it sounds like the epitome of a 'bad fan' but he's the actual creator of the show ohhh ewwwww.

And yeah the ending episode was a total ass-pull. Carly and Freddie didn't even really have a chance to become romantically interested in each other. It was more like Carly had to leave (for college or...something, I forget tbqh) and OOoooooooooooooo cue the audience gasp track because she decides randomly to give him a kiss like five minutes before the entire series ends.

Even if you're not into Sam and Freddie as a relationship, the Freddie/Carly thing just had so many icky overtones to it. (Freddie had MAJOR "Nice Guy" syndrome towards Carly, and part of the good thing about he and Sam dating was that it seemed like he dropped that shit entirely, Carly made it so clear that she just had zero attraction for Freddie that it was a WTF moment when she suddenly has the hots for him, etc. Just...blegh.)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, he was an ass, too. When he first came onto social media, he said he welcomed any comments, good or bad. Turns out bad comments left were either deleted, scrutinized, or people were banned from his website if they dared question anything. I remember people were concerned about another show he had-Victorious-and there was a scene where Ariana Grande's character Cat was in the janitor's room unconscious (I forgot what happened, she passed out somehow?) and the janitor had a rope in his hand, and there was a remark of a teacher passing by, saying "not again" to the janitor or along those lines, insinuating the janitor had strangled girls and left them in his closet before. A lot of people were very much wtf'ing about this scene, and when they asked him on his website what on earth that was all about? Had their IP banned. He's very assholeish about any critical comments, and honestly, he was very creepy towards his then-underage female costars on twitter-he used to call Miranda and Jeanette (Carly and Sam) gorgeous, beautiful, hot, etc., while his own wife was 'cute.' He's so fucking gross and weird.

This show aired at a time when I was really into rival shipping, and I honestly only kept watching because I thought they were going to get back together. The ending was stupid, and it would have been stupid even if I HAD shipped him with Carly, because Carly did. not. like. him. that. way. They repeated this. Over and over again. She had no interest in him and, at least in the first season, he was mildly creepy with his interest in her.

Meanwhile, Sam was an abusive jerk, but she slowly grew as a person and was able to form an actual bond of friendship with Freddie and there were all these hints and ugggghghhhhhh I am still angry about this and it's been like four goddamn years.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Completely agree with this comment. Looking back on it honestly they're all kind of terrible characters/people at times but Freddie/Sam made the most sense and doesn't carry uber creepy "Nice Guy" vibes that if you're just SUPER REALLY REALLY PERSISTENT that you too can "get the girl"! Not to mention it cast his relationship with Sam in a really gross "consolation prize" light. Sam and Freddie actually had an organic character arc and them getting together wasn't a random ass-pull, where at the end there I just found it really weird and un-Carly like that she suddenly looked at Freddie and went like "DAYUUUM" and suddenly had the hots for him and stuff. It just didn't gel.

I remember liking Sam, but I also hate "tomboy" female characters who always have perfectly curled and styled hair. It didn't seem to fit her personality.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I thought that was refreshing. Personally I'm tired of one-note tomboy characters. The way Sam was portrayed reminds me more in alot of ways of my actual tomboy friends. You can be a tomboy and still care about your appearance, and I hate the idea that in order to be a tomboy you need short hair and grass crusted on your jeans from playing [insert sport here] and you have no idea what makeup or hair products are. In reality lots of tomboys curl their hair in the morning, throw on a cute top. It's not a lack of effort that makes a tomboy.

Didn't the whole show become a ship pandering nightmare towards the last few seasons?

It was like relationship tango, first Freddie wanted to be with Carly who didn't want to be with him, but then he wanted to be with Sam who both did and didn't want to be with him, then Carly tried to get them together, than break them, then get them back together then realize she was in love with Freddie herself

That's how I remember it, anyway

Not to mention all the one off love interests

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'm wrong but I could have sworn it was Sam who ended up confessing to Freddie, who didn't know how to feel about it for a little while, and he ended up having to be the one who either put the brakes on that whole thing or went out with her. I remember it feeling kind of refreshing that she was the one who confessed (I think they ended up in some predicament and she kissed him out of the blue and admits she has feelings for him?), and that the guy was the one who had the choice. It felt more realistic to me of teenage relationships, in which plenty of girls end up confessing to the guys they like as well.

As for the ending...ehhh yeah it got to be a MAJOR trainwreck in many ways the past few seasons. It seems like there is a lot of ~abuse wank~ here on F!S about Sam but I think they're kind of forgetting basically all the characters acted the way at least occasionally (I remember Carly smacking Freddie a lot too), and it was so damn weird at the end because the entire premise of the show was that Carly Did. Not. Like. Freddie. That. Way, and them suddenly being interested in one another at the end just fell so, so flat.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
It was a weird ship, but at least those two characters had chemistry. Freddie and Carly had none.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I was an adult and I still watched. I felt the Carly/Freddie pairing was forced too, but the breakup was kind of forced as well.

Oh well, there was that kind of-sort of reunion on the short-lived Sam and Cat show, though from what I gathered, it was just more poking fun (whether at the Sam/Freddie pairing, or its fans, I can't tell). And nothing really happened anyway.

You're not the only one, OP. (Not me, a friend was talking about this a few days ago. Wait a minute...)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I have never seen the show, but your anger sounds justified to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Man, iCarly ship wars were so wild back in the day BUT as a diehard Carly/Sam shipper I never really got them. Probably cause I knew mine never would become canon.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-19 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Don't know anything about this show, but i feel you, OP. It's the same way I feel about himym's ending, and I don't think i'll ever be able to forgive it.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-20 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
What tf was the deal between Spencer and the kids, though? There was so much weirdness implying he had been oddly inappropriate with Gibby and Freddie. (Gibby giving Spencer massages? Freddie knowing Spencer had a birthmark on his ass cheek and looking again and grinning?) I don't understand how Nick let that go through. But IA, that ship was bizarre, but I feel like the ending was dumb in general. Why would Carly just give up everything to be with dad after all that time with her lifelong friends after so many seasons of trying to stay with Spencer? That whole show pissed me off in the end. I shouldn't be so mad as a grown woman watching that show but I was.
