It's been so long since I was last impressed by a fanfic. Even when fics come highly recced, they don't do it for me. The writing is tolerable, the plot is at best obvious, and the characterization suffers because of the ficauthor's bias.
I want to recapture the magic. I just don't know how :c

apparently I'm an elitist bitch

I never go by recs, they never live up to expectations for me. Instead I read authour summaries and try to pick interesting plots that sound in character. Thats always been the best starting point to find something good for me. But even then you just have to read and see.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you arrange to be 15 again? That usually works.

Seriously, that's where the magic comes from. Hormones, low education, and a near-complete lack of critical faculties and self-awareness.

Signed,
Someone in the same position as you

Sadly, you're right.

I've re-read Harry Potter fanfics I thought were as good as the books themselves when I read them at fifteen. Now? They're... okay. Not awful, but pretty mediocre.

In fact, I only just recently came across a fanfic that I actually enjoyed. And even that one had a lot of flaws, but it was engaging enough that I can look past them.

I actually agree.

And besides the actual age, there's the experience. With time, the things you see or do (or read) for the first time get fewer. You find out a lot of things are just variations on other things.

This, pretty much.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of agree with you there.

Eh, I feel you. It's like I woke up one day and realized that most romance fics don't actually have a plot, and now I can't really read them anymore.
I've personally also never really agreed with the people who claim that there are fics as good as literary masterpieces - I have yet to encounter any. Some fics are fun, but when you leave the fandom they tend to lose their luster.

Are you also using this as your form of porn consumption? Maybe you need to accept that you've outgrown fandom smut. We get older, it happens.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-02-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way, basically. But it's worse, because I also can't read original work without picking it apart.

Annnd that is why I have sadly taken up reading nothing but literature these days. I never thought it would come to this, but apparently it has.

I mostly never go by rec lists because it's pretty much always the same 10 or so fics listed, I dive in headfirst myself to see what I can find.

Though I am pretty easy to please fic-wise so I can usually find something I like.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
There are gems. They're few and far between, but there are. I solve my problem by noping out of every even slightly disappointing fic as quickly as possible. Leaves more time to look for the good ones.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
for what it's worth, I get the opposite problem. I find people with the greatest fics and nobody else is fucking reading them or giving any feedback. Admittedly there's some bias, one of the writers I like is also a friend, and she's about to just ditch fandom entirely.

I don't know what it is. A flaw in search algorithms. Cliques floating all their buddies' shit to the top to bury the small fry with something new. Whatever it is. People like you don't find people like them.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you're just growing up and want a different style of writing and content.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Probably time you read a different genre for a while. I got similarly burned out on mysteries a while back--had all the same reactions you describe. I spent a year or so reading fanfic, biographies, and history, and now I find myself able to enjoy mysteries again. You sound like you need a break.

That's really too bad. I am still finding fic and fic authors that write incredible stuff, that I enjoy immensely. I hope you can either figure out how to find joy in fic again, or find pro-fic that does it for you, anon.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I'm still constantly discovering wonderfully written fics. But then, I do have a pretty wide poly-fandom umbrella. Maybe branching out into more fandoms might work?

I haven't read fanfic in months (Not much anyway, which is very unusual for me), but it isn't because I don't want to, I just... Keep finding other things to do with my free time.

But as far as fanfic goes, I sort of feel you because the older I get, the harder it is to find fanfic to satisfy me. It definitely isn't impossible, but my tastes have changed and sometimes it takes a lot of time and effort to find something that really catches my interest. Every fandom is different too, so while, say, I was in Kingsman fandom I found a decent amount of good fic, Hannibal fandom is trickier.

Maybe take a break? I don't think it is uncommon to cycle in and out of finding fic interesting.

All I'm thinking is "This fic is tolerable enough I suppose, but not handsome enough to tempt ME."

Like others have said, try taking a break for a little while?

If that's out of the question, try reading in different genres and fandoms. Sometimes you have to dig a bit, but there's still good stories out there.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I have to agree. Reading fanfic has kind of lost some magic to me. I still like to write it, but I don't seek out reading it like I used to. I think I've been disappointed too many times.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I'm sorry to hear that. I thought the same until I came across this one fic that's a WIP THAT IS BEING CONSISTENTLY UPDATED and I swear to god, it's over 100k so far and I re-read it every. single. night. It's one of my rare pairs and hits everything just right and man

man

that is a good feeling

and i am sorry you are missing out

I'm finding that I have to drop my standards. If a fic has a great plot and nice characterisation, it's usually riddled with spelling errors. (Like the last one I read. I powered through because the story was good but "alright" annoys the crap out of me.) If there are few spelling errors and the plot is good, the characters are OOC. Fuck you, venn diagrams.
