Nope. Personally I think rapists should forfeight all rights to parenthood of any children conceived because of their raping the victim. Sadly that isn't entirely true legally. But nice in this one fictional instance it is true.

He didn't rape her, though. He attempted it, but she went back at some later point and they had consensual sex. Or did I misunderstand what happened?

Oh. I honestly know very little about the fandom other than that rape was involved. That still sounds kind of icky, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it was icky as hell. But the child wasn't conceived through rape. He's still a terrible person.

Okay. Didn't know that. Knew about the rape (not that it was just attempted), and knew that she was his daughter, so just assumed.

Honestly don't think I ever want to watch this movie (or read the comic) if they are portraying a consensual relationship between two people after one tries to rape the other. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I interpreted it as her having consensual sex with him later as a way to get her power back. I'm not sure if that was what it was, but that was my interpretation.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
It was more of a one-time thing than an actual relationship, and she doesn't let him see the daughter afterwards.

Also, he dies in the beginning of the story and only shows up in some flashbacks, so while he's an important character he doesn't appear in a lot of the story and the relationship with the mother is only brought up a few times.

It's a plot point. The character who's atheist god literally finds faith again at the thought that this somehow happened.

One of watchmen's themes was that unlike the comics it was deconstructing, nothing's ever very simple.

If you don't know the canon, why the fuck do you comment as if you do until someone corrects you?
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-02-25 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Because I thought I knew? I knew about the rape, I knew she was his daughter, so I drew a fairly logical conclusion. Also, I spent 6 hours today taking an exam on 2 hours of sleep and I'm tired. So I commented hastily. Sorry.

That's not what happened. He attempted to assault her in 1940, but the hooded justice stopped him.

In 1948, while she was married to another man, they had consensual sex.

Okay. Didn't know that. Still really, really icky. And I don't think I ever want to watch a fandom where there is consensual sex between two characters at any point after one tried to rape the other. Sounds like an attempt by the writer to be dark and edgy without actually thinking it through.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's not how it was. It was a pretty complicated element of a very complicated story, about really complicated and messed-up people (and they were messed up for a VERY plot-essential reason, this being a deconstruction of superheroes), and a big part of the importance of the consensual sex (which took place offpage) was the sheer improbability of something like that ever happening. (It was also implied that, psychologically, the reason she had sex with him again was to take back power.)

Please, for the love of fucking god, STOP talking about something YOU HAVEN'T EVEN READ.

You do know this is over a decade old comicbook right?

calm the fuck down.

Seconding you, ignore the other butthurt anon(s), you're right. The Internet would be a better place if people stop talking about things they don't know shit about.

Fucking THIS. There's no shame in not knowing something. Just don't act like you do.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
The writer is Alan Moore, and rape for the sake of "dark and edgy" is kind of his Thing, so you're not that far off imo.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Christ, that's just so embarrassingly inaccurate it hurt to read.

Please don't just repeat shit you heard someplace as though you know anything. It's unbecoming.

THANK you. People actually knowing what they're talking about is such a breath of fresh air.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Watchmen is one of those canons where if you don't know the source material, you really shouldn't run your mouth about it. The characters and storyline are complex and layered. You're not going to get the full scope from looking at a gifset on Tumblr, and Moore fans tend to be pretty passionate.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
For a value of "pretty passionate" that is "rude assholes".

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
For a value of "rude assholes" that is "Wah! How dare you tell me my facts are incorrect!"
