I think she dodged a bullet

He was a pretty horrible person.

Eh, I don't know. Look, a lot of us have this drive to actually *know* family members we missed out having a relationship with. Even just to know the people they were. For me it was a sister, I can only imagine the feeling is even stronger with a father (even if he's a trainwreck of a person, most people who never knew their parents would probably choose to have at least met them).

yeah but he was a literal monster didn't he kill a woman pregnant with his child?? he was so scary!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
She slashed his face open with a beer bottle first. He acted without thinking.

Yeah, he most certainly was. but hen , I do love how complex everyone was (while not necessarily excusing their actions).

I think that there's something wrong with you, both intellectually and morally.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Why? It's clear he loved her.

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-02-25 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Personally I think rapists should forfeight all rights to parenthood of any children conceived because of their raping the victim. Sadly that isn't entirely true legally. But nice in this one fictional instance it is true.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
He didn't rape her, though. He attempted it, but she went back at some later point and they had consensual sex. Or did I misunderstand what happened?

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-02-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. I honestly know very little about the fandom other than that rape was involved. That still sounds kind of icky, though.

That's not what happened. He attempted to assault her in 1940, but the hooded justice stopped him.

In 1948, while she was married to another man, they had consensual sex.

Okay. Didn't know that. Still really, really icky. And I don't think I ever want to watch a fandom where there is consensual sex between two characters at any point after one tried to rape the other. Sounds like an attempt by the writer to be dark and edgy without actually thinking it through.

THANK you. People actually knowing what they're talking about is such a breath of fresh air.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Watchmen is one of those canons where if you don't know the source material, you really shouldn't run your mouth about it. The characters and storyline are complex and layered. You're not going to get the full scope from looking at a gifset on Tumblr, and Moore fans tend to be pretty passionate.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
For a value of "pretty passionate" that is "rude assholes".

Nnnah. Unless you just wanted to see more dysfunction and terrible-ness from the characters of Watchmen. Maybe you do.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't that the point of the watchmen?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes but everyone in Watchmen is already plenty fucked up, so unless OP wants to see just... fucked up in a different way? It doesn't seem worth it.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
It was clear the Comedian loved her and it's canon that the last thing he was doing before he died was that he was trying to write a letter to her.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-25 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't mean he would be have been a good father.

That's the whole tragedy right there, beyond the fact that he did something loathsome. In another universe, The Comedian isn't a rapist and he gets to be a dad. Maybe not a good dad, but he gets to be there for his little girl.
