They probably are. Like the religious people that think everyone would go around murdering people and eating puppies if they didn't believe in God. It's enough to make you wonder what's going in their mind.

In my experience the more somone insists that fiction has to be completely sanitized and wholesom the more they have to hide themself.

The majority of people realises that fiction (fantasy for god's sake!) and real live are separate things. And those who don't have a whole bunch of additional problems to deal with anyway.

Pfft, people really think that relationship is anything more than crushing and flirting and friendship?

(But I agree that Jou should be with someone hsi own age. Like Seto :p)

I mean ... not that relationships with significant age differences can't be healthy relationships irl, but I do understand the issue if it's a ship involving a teenager. If they were talking about two (or more, ofc) adults on the other hand, I'd agree with you.

Why? It's fandom. You can have ships involving talking ponies and transforming robots, we're talking about fantasy here.

they sound like they haven't been in fandom for very long if the idea of shipping a 16 year old and a 24 year old is what gets them clutching their pearls. most of my ships are so screwed up that I didn't even blink at that

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there are people who ship age gap ships because / in a way that fetishizes the youth of the much younger character - in fandom, and in culture more generally. And I think people who have that kind of reaction think of that part of it much more, probably because of their own personal experiences with those kinds of people. So, I mean, I can get where they're coming from.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
tumblr's incapable of separating fantasy from reality

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I reading this right? The guy is the 16 year old?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah? It doesn't always have to be the girl.

I used to follow a person who posted about how she read up on age gap issues and was now feeling all guilty about how her ex-girlfriend was only 17 when they started dating. SHE HERSELF WAS 19 BACK THEN. She rambled about how two years can make such a difference at that age and proceeded to ask her followers if her behavior was predatory. I unfollowed her shortly after.

I saw someone here say they think it's because of how kids today are. They play a lot of violent video games and watch violent media and that's safe and understandable. But SEX, sex is this Big Scary Thing. They've not had much experience with it, they've gotten a lot of conflicting scary messages about it.

So they freak out about it in fandom and focus on it and really obsess about if it's pure and unproblamatic or not, because it's scary and unknown.

I used to be all over age differences, but the older I get, the weirder it is to me. Sigh. There go all my favorite works.

lol, anime fandom never change.

Being that age of consent varies from location to location, consuming or creating sexually explicit fanworks with underage characters/adult characters could actually get you in legal trouble.

Or, you know, someone could find it distasteful because they've been molested or been perused by creeper adults as young teens.

(This coming from someone who's got multiple ships where the age gap is hundreds of years.)

But I'm sure it's actually just because they're all pearl clutching sticks in the mud. *eye roll*

I'm just cracking up because it's Mai and Jounouchi. How do you take that series seriously long enough to be offended at shipping? Look at Pegasus ffs! Look at Malik! It's about a teenager who has a crazy 5000 year old ghost of a pharaoh living in his head who (in the original version) condemned other people to basically living hells because of stupid stuff, then there's the other teenager who owns a huge company and iirc threw his asshole adoptive father out of the window or something, then there's the other teenager who has a psychopathic alter ego and murdered his father and started an international criminal organization based around card games....
What the fuck, how are you even bothered by something like an age gap here.

You think that's bad? People were trying to shame adult pairs like Finn/Rey for age gaps.

19/24 year old is problematic somehow. And it was a Stormpilot person who was going on about it, so they were being utter hypocrites considering that the age gap betwee Finn/Poe is a ton bigger than Finn/Rey. They aren't even consistent in this "age gaps are icky!!" mentality.

I'm old enough to remember when Yugioh fandom didn't have this shit (also something about Puppyshipping, but no one seemed to mind that people shipped Jou and Mai). This was about 10 years ago though...

It's okay. They can wait two years for Jounouchi to be legal and then they can go at it like rabbits!

In all seriousness, I've seen them freak out about a two year age gap. I don't think they are able to separate fantasy from reality. At least not yet. Some of them I would like to believe they will grow out of that mentality while others... not so much.

Hahahah, sounds like the kind of people who come into the KakaSaku tag and start screeching about how Sakura is 12 and Kakashi is 26...like these characters haven't aged AT ALL since the start of the series. *rolls eyes*

I have to wonder why these people are more offended by age gaps but have nothing to say of fictional violence. Drawing cute romantic arc of an age difference ship is more sinful than chopping off someones head according to fandom.

Unless the person is already a bad seed, pretty much everyone knows the difference between fantasy and reality. Just because I like being a menace in GTA doesn't mean I'd ever even want to rob cars and run people over IRL.

Then again we live in a world where people seem to think that because your interested in unsolved murder cases or criminal psychology you are secretly a serial killer. People are stupid.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-07 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Being disturbed in fiction by the same things you're disturbed by in real life is pretty normal.
Judging other people for liking it is kind of shitty, but probably more about the sex part than the fiction part (people are weird about sex!)

I dislike big age gaps a lot (if one character is underage at least), but I'm not going to assume the person is creepy in real life just because they ship something like that.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-07 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I wonder what sort of flipouts people would have if I wrote a romance where a twentysomething college student meets a professor at his college eleven years his senior (and only twelve years younger than his own father) and ends up marrying her.

Because that would be the real life story of my parents.
