[Lord of the Rings]

Merry, Pippin and Sam were the best characters. Hands down.

The first time I saw the first movie, I hadn't read the books yet, and I thought Merry and Pippin were kind of the generic comic relief, sort of "why are those two her again?". But they easily became my favorite characters too, and I like their movie portrayals better than the books even.

They certainly embraced their parts.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
NGL, I am not a fan of the movies in comparison to the books (I don't hate the movies or expect them to somehow include everything in the books, but most of the changes they made from the books just aren't my thing.) But I seriously love the movie version of how Merry and Pippin join up with Frodo and Sam about 100000x more than the book version. I just find the way they get caught up in the adventure by sheer accident really funny and satisfying.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-09 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. As much fun as they were they were also the ones who could make me cry.

They're not my favorites but I do like them. They had a good character arc over the course of the three films.

I totally get that. There was something for everyone and all the characters are great. Sam is the only hobbit I'm personally super interested in, but Merry and Pippin were still awesome. I honestly don't think there are any characters I dislike.

Could never tell them apart. No idea who's Pippin and who's Meri.

For the love of god stop talking. No one likes you.

I can tell them apart, but it kind of botheres me that where the book has "Pippin who is young and excitable and Merry who is clever", the film gives us "Pippin who is young and excitable and Merry who is the slightly smarter Pippin".

MTE
I kept confusing movie- merry and pippin

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Does this really need to be a secret?

+1

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Merry, Pippin, and Faramir were the only characters I actually liked in the movies. I have a fondness for often-overlooked or derided characters who still do good.

They weren't my top favourite thing about the movies but I do absolutely love them and their character arcs were pretty good so I totally see where you're coming from OP.

All these LotR movie secrets lately make me want to rewatch them c:

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. :) They're my go to comfort movies.

I sadly don't get to rewatch them that often because of the massive time investment, but yes, similar for me :)

Way ahead of you. They made me watch them last week. Haven't watched rotk though because it's my least favorite

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Pippin is my fav! I love his character arc, and that scene in ROTK where he sings while Denethor stuffs himself full of food and Faramir gets injure on the battlefield.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Saaaaaammm! I love Merry and Pip, but I love Samwise the most. I think I'm going to pop in my extended editions this weekend while I do my spring cleaning/organizing. Thanks, OP!

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, they were adorable as hell.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP! I adored Merry and Pippin (Pippin especially <3), and they - and their stories - were easily my favourite parts of the entire trilogy. Also co-signing the "better than the book versions" comment!

Yeah I usually love the books more when it comes to LOTR but Merry and Pippin's character arcs had a...I don't know, a kick to them in the movies that wasn't in the books. More pointed and with more momentum. Like that scene where Pippin breaks down while singing to Denethor - it causes me a certain awesome whoosh-feeling of "holy shit was this the immature cute little goofball breaking into Gandalf's fireworks at the beginning of this story???" which is a really great narrative element for these two IMO.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed! That scene gets me every time.
