Re: What about your identity have you lied about online?

I've been telling the gaming community that I'm 14 for twelve years. One of these days they're going to stop believing it, but meh, details.

...why?!

Several reasons. It started because I'm dfab, and pretending to be underage discouraged most of the creepy guys from creeping on me, so my block list was much more manageable. After I started identifying as male all the time, saying I was younger avoided most of the awkward questions about my girly voice. Sometimes gamers can be assholes about that sort of thing.

Would think this would just change the creeps (and increase the creepy factor)...

In my experience it turned a fair few of them off, but I may have just gotten really lucky with people leaving me alone. No system is perfect though.

Surprisingly, no. A lot of the creepiness in gamer communities comes about because it's accepted by the vocal portions of the community - there are the occasional people who'll shut someone being a sleaze down, but most of the time he'll get encouragement from his peers, or at best silence. People who sexually harass young teenagers don't get that approval, though - most of their peer group will turn on them, and will turn on them viciously.

The creeps who get through anyway are definitely creepier, but there are a hell of a lot fewer of them, and there's a lot more support for outing them/getting them banned.

Huh.

Well, that's my faith in humanity restored in a very strange way.
