I've only ever lied on dating sites. I'm bi, but I usually say I'm either straight or gay. Because I don't want to deal with the creepy guys who post creepy messages every time I say I'm bi on any dating site profile.

I'll lie about my birthday, gender, and other misc details personal details on some sites because I don't like it to track me, but otherwise not really.

I also play up my opinions when I'm anon so I'll get a response, but the base belief's still there.

I have a really big problem with anxiety and paranoia, even though I don't really post anything controversial. So I change lots of little things, like turning a sister into a brother, or giving a job that is different from my own, but with enough similarities that the story still works.

I also occasionally will leave typos or poor wording in my comments, even if it means my comment is confusing, so that it looks nothing like my usual speech pattern. Like I said, major anxiety issue. I'm working on it.

I've been telling the gaming community that I'm 14 for twelve years. One of these days they're going to stop believing it, but meh, details.

I've claimed to be a woman in almost every space where I'm not anon.

Why would you do that tho? Women are treated horrible in almost every real and virtual space. Why would you volunteer for that?

It's more lying by omission, but I don't share personal details about where I live, family, where I went to college, things like that. Or I might change the details slightly so it's not as easy to identify me in case someone I know from IRL stumbles across my fanfic/blog.

posted as a boy in my teens. It was funny because my guy friend turned out to be a girl too. And the she was like: oh, so I see why you rejected that girl's advances.

I often claim to be asexual or that I have Asperger's syndrome on online fora, just for the lulz at the shit storm that follows those two terms. Even when I say nothing else, people leap in defending me or attacking me based solely on them.

People should be more wary of who they're defending tbh

I can only think of the times I lied about my age to access to porn. Been 18 since I was 13.

I don't lie about my identity, but I do refuse to give certain details out.

In my early teens I always lied about my age and said I was 16 (well, unless it was adult shit, then I was 18). Otherwise, not much! I usually correct people when they get my gender/country wrong, but I'm private about almost all of my personal info.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't so much lie as I don't tell the truth about my gender. If someone assumes I'm female I don't correct them.

The birthdate I post online is not my RL birthdate, but on the flipside, I have no problem with saying that it's not my real birthdate.

When anon, I tend to vary my age a couple of years in either direction - not far enough that I'd be of a different generation and actually have to stop and think about how I would have to present myself.

I tend to tell stories about RL where I slightly change my relationship with people, like my cousin becomes my friend, my friend becomes my co-worker, etc. I also alter a lot of the details in those stories. Mostly, I feel weird telling other people's stories in a way that might get them (and me) recognized.

I've knocked a few years off my age, given my birthday as February 29, and renamed my home town and many of its streets and landmarks. (i.e., there is no such thing as the North Fork of the Badger River anywhere near where I live)
