I do think there are elements of fandom that have just fundamentally changed. But I agree that it's not entirely a negative change, just a different style, and we can get kinda crotchety about it sometimes, and sort of like... dismissive throwing-the-baby-out-with-the-bathwater kind of thing.

Firstly, pretty sure like half the people here are millennials.

Second, you can think something is shit technology without being a geriatric luddite - it's not because something is new, that it's automatically better (sometimes - often even - it takes a few "generations" of technology to optimize user interfaces).

Third, SJW is not a synonym for younster. Hell, I've met SJW's older than me, they unfortunately just end to congregate in certain fandom spaces.

i was rereading the msscribe saga the other day and reccomend anyone who thinks fandom policing and the nastiness of ship wars, etc. is anything new and born of tumblr should go read it and marvel at how awful people have ALWAYS been.

I always thought F!S was full of SJWs. Everyone here seems so liberal and openly feminist. I mean, I'm an SJW, or at least that's what everyone calls me on Reddit... supporting BLM and Syrian refugees makes you an SJW, as does believing sexism exists. Believing Gamergate was about women getting harrassed rather than "ethics in games journalism" also makes you an SJW. I'm not making this up, these are commonly-held views on the most well-trafficked portions of Reddit. If you look at r/shitredditsays and agree that most of the posts they document are offensive, then you are indeed an SJW.

People need to stop acting like SJW is a bad thing. It just means you oppose bigotry. That's it.

Well, things HAVE changed from back in the day. Remember when words like "rape", "appropriation", and "trigger" actually meant something, instead of being used to describe something you don't like? Remember when if you made a faux pas and apologized for it people generally forgave you and moved on?

Sure, Fandom has always been shitty, but I don't remember it ever being this shitty. I remember when it was actually fun, instead of having to walk on eggshells and worry about whatever it is you said will cause you to get doxxed and stalked.

I blame whatever it is in the water now a days.

There's been an age poll of FS. While there are some older users here, it definitely skews toward people in their mid 20s. If you were as observant as you seem to think, you would've known that.

You're pretty much right. It doesn't happen all the time, but every once in a while I'll see someone say something pretty basic and non-threatening regarding sexism, racism, homophobia, etc. and other users will litterally flip their lids and accuse them of being evil SJWs, or they'll go on a giant melodramatic rant about how the big scary SJWs and how they're destorying literately everything and it's allllll tumblr's fault lmao.

And I don't think this place is full of bigots or anything, but I've seen some really questionable comments about lgbt people and women in the past that still bug me to this day. F!S is far far far from being the worst site on the Internet, but it's nowhere near as progressive or modern like some users here like to pretend.
