Best "First Episode" To Introduce Your Favorite?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-15 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to actually like the whole "begin at the beginning" method if I'm going to try to introduce someone to something, but I know that there are other options.

(Most famously, "Blink" as a gateway drug to Doctor Who, which I think is a horrible idea precisely because it is so different. It won't give someone an actual idea of whether or not they would like Doctor Who as a whole.)

So if you were going to try to interest someone in your favorite episodic media property, where would you start, and why?

I tend to show "Jyushimatsu Festival" to my friends that haven't seen Osomatsu-san yet. It's not a full encapsulation of what the show's like, but I think it's a pretty good idea, and so far it hasn't failed to get everyone laughing their asses off.

Christ, that bomb squad segment...

I kinda hate starting a show from the pilot (except in cases of EXTREMELY serialized shows where each episode is totally built on what happened previously). Just personal preference mostly, but also because IMO most pilots are very unrepresentative of what the bulk of the show is really like.

I would try and pick the most "day in the life" sort of episode possible. Like, something that shares the most common factors with all other episodes? The least "unusual" episode possible, and the one that incorporates as many elements of the show in the most balanced way possible. Also something that doesn't rely on an existing familiarity with the characters.

I would pick something from the first season (or maybe the second, for older shows that take longer to get going) though, unless it's one of those shows that gets massively retooled or the characters/style changes a lot after a very weird first season, like Parks and Rec.

For example, for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, my "introduce" episode go-to is "What's My Line? 1 and 2".

Community: Season 1's paint ball episode! Mostly because that was the first one I watched & it got me hooked (until the fourth season, anyway).

I'm someone who likes to begin at the beginning almost always, but I 100% agree with this. S1's paint ball episode is the perfect place to start if you want to get someone hooked.

It. Was. So. Good.

For Doctor Who, I actually don't have a go-to episode. Instead, I try to figure out what they would like based on their general preferences; do they like funny stories, scary stories, adventure stories? Is there a particular actor I know they like?

(Doctor Who has had so many different eras that it is impossible to find a "typical" episode, anyway.)

Teen Wolf: While I think Night School is the better episode, I'd start with Heart Monitor, because it leads into it.

I always start with the first episode because how can you watch a show any other way and have it build? Unless there's no story arc at all, and those tend not to make it into my favorites.

Same. Sitcoms might be an exception where I would maybe choose an episode where you can see each character type pretty well, but even then I feel that the pilot often sets up the premise of the show and that it would be weird to see it later.

For Fringe, there's two options as they are related episodes.

If you mostly want to watch the whole series, but also want to skip the awkward buildup as the series figures itself out a little, start at episode 1x07, "In Which We Meet Mr. Jones." This will jump into the action and you can go from there. You'll meet the titular main antagonist for the season, and get thrust into a mystery at the same time as the main characters.

If you want a taste for what Fringe does best when it's up-and-moving, watch episode 1x14, "Ability." This episode has everything Fringe is known for: body horror, mad science, conspiracies, the direct involvement of antagnoist Mr. Jones, Bishop family mysteries, a bit of shadowy MegaCorporation Massive Dynamic, and most of all an introduction to whether or not Olivia has an secret ability even she's not aware of. If you like "Ability," then go back and watch at least from 1x07, don't start there!

I don't know about a first episode, but I think Cowboy Bebop is a great gateway drug for anime in general.
