The manga was Trans 101. I suppose it's an interesting and easy reading for people who don't know much about trans issues.

^ This

Also it's from Japan which based on what I know is probably even more behind on trans acceptance than we are. So it's a much bigger deal.

NAYRT

Yeah, finding any sort of trans character in Japanese media that's not playing for 'trap'/okama entertainment seems like a huge step forward even if it's generically Trans 101 as the other anon called it.

Eh, it's not as huge of a deal as you seem to think it is. Trans issues are behind in Japan, but not in the way you're thinking. Lots of people are aware of trans people. There are even trans characters both explicitly trans and heavily trans coded popping up in unrelated-to-trans-issues anime (of course it's 99.9% trans female and .01% trans male though).

The place where trans issues are faltering isn't this "trans 101" type shit, it's more of a cultural acceptance issue within the wider LGBT movement. People in Japan know about trans people. It's more the fact that they don't accept trans people in the same way they don't accept gay, lesbian and bisexual people. It's "shameful" in the same manner and you're supposed to be lowkey and not talk about it.

The fact that you're getting your info from anime as opposed from actually living in Japan makes me think you're full of shit.

Seriously, have you actually been to an okama bar?

Okama are widely accepted in Japan. I have yet to meet anyone express opinions like "oh they're just mentally ill" there, nobody thinks that, whereas LOADS of people in the US believe that. At most, people might think they're weird, and it might affect their job prospects (but just being a woman will affect your job prospects, so...)

That said, transmen are invisible in Japan, as are lesbians.

Naw, Japan is way ahead of the US in terms of trans acceptance, at least in terms of transwomen. There's plenty of transwoman celebrities that have been around long before Caitlyn Jenner.

And the other commenter is ignorant - okama isn't a negative term, and lots of transwomen self-identify as okama. I'd say it's more acceptable to be okama than to be gay. In fact, if you're male say you like men, a lot of people will ASSUME you're okama.

Let me put it this way: you can go to okama bars in like all the major cities in Japan, and I don't see the equivalent in the US.
