I'm really fond of the theory that she's a Kenobi, myself.

Being Obi-Wan's direct descendant makes no sense for his characterization, though, as it would retcon him into a shitty parent and enormous hypocrite. Great-niece or something would of course be theoretically possible, but it would be a bit lame reveal, really.

What about Satine?

Either a Kenobi or a reincarnation of the Chosen One are my two pet theories at the moment.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-18 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love an adoption take on it! Enough about ~superior bloodlines~, adoption!!!

(Anonymous) 2016-03-18 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Disney hates adoption, adoption is a sure route to evil according to Disney.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-18 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
But... wasn't Tarzan adopted?

I dunno, I feel like Disney is awfully big on found family.

Snow White and the dwarves
Sleeping Beauty and the fairies
Bambi and a bunch of other forest creatures
Lion King's Simba and Timon and Pumba
Toy Story toys
Up's Carl and Russell
A bunch of Dalmatians

Not to mention, Angels in the Outfield, Candleshoe, and The Apple Dumpling Gang.

I don't even really care who she's related to - she can be just about anyone's daughter for all I care. The only reason I'm in favour of her being related to Kylo is that it would mean a canon Reylo ship is out of the question. People can ship what they want but I think it would be a terrible move to have a canon Reylo romance.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
It continues to amaze me that Reylo shippers think that the two of them being cousins is a bigger impediment to their ship than the fact he murdered Han Solo right in front of her.

Seriously guys, it's not happening.

[personal profile] fishnchips 2016-03-19 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
That and, you know, the fact that he: tortured Poe (which Rey had no real interaction with but is now allied with), cut up her buddy Finn right in front of her leaving him in critical condition, tried to force his way into her brain, was complicit in the murder of millions/billions of people, murdered a bunch of kids (which she doesn't know in episode VII but will now in VIII) ...
Like, I'm definitely not of the people who say you shouldn't ship it because it's ~ problematic~. Go ahead and ship whatever you want. But this as a canon romance would be such a mindnumbingly terrible idea (plus I loathe the "redemption through *~*~true love~*~*" trope).

I don't understand how people think she could be a Skywalker or Solo. She met both Han and Leia (and Luke) and they didn't say shit.

Maybe a Kenobi. But personally, I'd rather she just be random kid. I mean does everyone in this big vast universe have to be related?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
There's still Finn as an honorary adoptee, if nothing else.

If Rey's an Organa-Solo, then Han and Leia are the worst parents in the galaxy, and Kylo Ren's pretty much justified in ditching them...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Daisy Ridley put a stop to the "Rey Solo" theory anyway and confirmed it's bullshit.

I would love for her to be this girl that Luke took in as a daughter, maybe shortly before everything went to shit, because I find it hard to imagine Luke having the sexual relations no matter what the EU tells me. And just because it would be interesting for that kind of bond to be reestablished with the same guilt/responsibility you'd expect if she was related to him by blood.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a fair bet that her bio family is dead, OP. So I believe you're going to get your wish.

(Also, Rey Palpatine theory ftw.)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm calling it -- R2D2 is her father. He'd have come back for her if not for that pesky coma.

Rey is a Skywalker. By blood. Full stop.

[personal profile] otakugal15 2016-03-21 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hate to break it to you nonny, but the movie was REALLY REALLY obvious about who she's related to. The super obvious parallels, “That lightsaber was Luke’s, and his father’s before him, and now it calls to you.” the very obvious hark backs to certain scenes, cues, fighting styles, cinematography, etc.

"...his father’s before him..." - Maz Kanata to Rey
"I am a Jedi. Like my father before me." - Luke Skywalker

"The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power, too." - Luke Skywalker from that one trailer.
(as in, she ALSO has this power...that the Skywalker family has. so much emphasis on the family part there)

This quote from Kathleen Kennedy:
"The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga. The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story. The Anthology films offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe."

These promo images of Rey and these promo images of Anakin:

Daisy Ridley confirmed that she is NOT a Solo.

Not to mention Mark Hamill's awesome trolling that I do honestly believe is the truth. He's just going about it in a way that has people constantly in a state channeling Oprah "So what is the truth?"

I'm firmly on the Finn Skywalker bus myself. It makes more sense to me vis-a-vis Luke's character--I can't imagine the Luke that I love abandoning a five-year-old on a desert planet (which he knows first hand is a very hard place to live) for ANY reason.

Instead, having his son kidnapped by the First Order and then the destruction of his fledgling praxium? Yeah, now I get why even Luke would hide away from the galaxy after those blows.

(And Kylo Ren is a Skywalker. So even if Finn or Rey turns out not to be Luke's child, these films are still (as Star Wars movies always are) about Skywalkers messing up the galaxy.)

Re: Rey is a Skywalker. By blood. Full stop.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, Finn won't be. Sorry. And it's a fact that Skywalkers can be rather...over emotional and can over react.

As far as Kylo is concerned, he's like Leia. Leia never identified with the Skywalker last name. She may be one, but she doesn't identify with it. Kylo is either a Solo or an Organa who WANTS to be seen as a Skywalker...for the wrong reasons. So, to me, he doesn't count.

"The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power, too."

That voiceover is literally pulled from ROTJ. Luke was talking to Leia. I ? ? ??? Do you know anything about Star Wars you just combusted your whole argument by not having any idea of the actual Skywalker legacy.
