[Downton Abbey]

You can't force someone to enjoy something. You can force them to pretend to enjoy something, or you can (maybe) convince or brainwash them into enjoying something, but you can't actually force someone to feel any kind of way.

Sorry, pet peeve of mine. Did you mean you want her to enjoy it in spite of herself, or that you want him to force her to pretend to enjoy it?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-18 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
What? You can force someone to physically enjoy something. Forced orgasm is a kink for a reason

(Anonymous) 2016-03-18 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're misunderstanding. in this case the OP was referring to being forced to physically enjoy something - to feel intense sexual stimulation in a way that is pleasurable. It's a massive kink. Nothing to do with pretend or brainwashing, just physical pleasure even when you yourself mentally do not want it at all.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-18 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed. yes, some rape victims might get physical /pleasure/ out of the stimulus, but that's not the same as enjoying something.

Somewhat off-topic: I had never seen Downton Abbey and I went over a girlfriend's house to watch the last two episodes with her and I honestly found myself appalled at how much I wanted Mary to suffer because she was such a bitch. Like. I never reacted to a character like that before, and now that you said that, and JESUS FUCKING CHRIST I FEEL LIKE HOT GARBAGE for thinking it, but I would have paid to see that. And that's from watching the last two episodes where, apparently, she wasn't even as bad as previous episodes??

Actually I think Mary was at her very worst in the penultimate episode (where she outs Edith to her fiance). Mary has many good qualities but she is HORRIBLE to Edith, and so bewilderingly adored by so many others she is essentially a kind of Mary Sue, notwithstanding her awful behavior to so many. She is at her best when she doesn't have to be--that is, she is most likeable when she is championing someone (usually her lady's maid, Anna--they share a close friendship). Interesting character but yeah, she behaved absolutely dreadfully to Edith. Loved the ensuing smackdown by EVERYBODY.

The thing about Downton Abbey is that 1. The character development for a huge number of characters is ridiculously badly written and 2. Mary is the most massive and obvious writer's pet, so much so that she was written consistently more bitchy and terrible with each season without any real consequences. She wasn't as bad in the beginning. The weird thing is that the writer(s?) didn't even seem to be aware of how terrible she was.

Julian Fellowes writes all the episodes but there are two episodes total where there is an additional writer credited.

Ah yes, thanks! I thought I remembered Julian Fellowes being the sole writer on Downton Abbey, but I'm so used to saying "writers" because most others shows tend to have several that I wasn't sure anymore. (The fact that there was generally just one writer makes the lack of character development and the constant ret-conning of the character development that actually happened even more maddening, though.)

Now I'm wondering why there were extra writers for those episodes, both in the first season, and then never again, lol. They're not even like the first two eps.

...What episode is this?

I think it's 1x03, and OP is correct that it is pretty consensual. And I won't say much more beyond that because there are major spoilers about that scene, in case you haven't seen the series- I know perfectly well people can miss out on phenomenally popular things! At that point in the story, it's still a good show. Knowing what I know now, I'd recommend stopping after S2! 3 is still okay in that overall the characters aren't horrid caricatures yet, but there is awful BAAAAAATES drama and absolutely nobody fucking cares.

Thank you for your detailed comment!! I've been looking to get into it but haven't gotten around to it yet, so this is very helpful :)

If you want something kinda similar (aside from a obvious rec for the 1971 Upstairs, Downstairs), I will pass on a recommendation for The Grand (1997), set in a 1920s hotel. One of the shows Russell T. Davies did before Queer as Folk and then Doctor Who. Although S1 of this two-season series is stronger (a couple major actors get replaced), it's still an enjoyable soapy drama with engaging characters-- Mark McGann steals scenes as the Machiavellian younger brother of the owner, and the always-awesome Susan Hampshire as a mysterious permanent resident at the hotel. And noting the warning on this secret thread, I should probably note that The Grand should have a trigger warning for rape, if that's an issue; as should one of the later seasons of Downton if you decide to watch that.

Thank you! (I'm also the anon you gave all those costume drama recs to a little while ago, so you've been very helpful! <3)

Why do women enjoy women getting raped in fiction? I assume those who get off to it have self esteem issues and hate themselves. Pathetic tbh.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Assuming you're NOT actually a troll:

There are a few different elements to why some women enjoy rape or "ravishment" fantasy.

American society is still really weird about women and sexuality. Especially young women. Girls are told to be pure, to "save" themselves for marriage, that "True Love Waits" and that we shouldn't even be wanting sex, never mind the hormones telling (most of us) that sex us really really interesting and wouldn't we love to hop on the quarterback, or Justin Bieber, or that guy sitting next to us on the bus?

But good girls don't do that. Good girls don't even THINK ABOUT that.

So what's a good girl to do? Rape Fantasy to the rescue. She can imagine all the sexy fun times she wants, and it's not her fault. She was made to do it.

Another reason is that women want to be desired. So it's not surprising that the fantasy about being so desirable that a guy just cannot help himself can be a potent one.
