[Jeeves and Wooster, P.G. Wodehouse]

Unsurprising. As soon as the canon is difficult, the writing takes off straight for AUville. Much easier than studying the source material or doing research.

Sadly, I agree. I wish more authors would put in the effort but I can understand why they don't... they simply don't need to in order to gain an audience, and it's harder than just writing without regard to the setting.

Agreed, in general.

If I'm writing something set in the 20's you can bet your britches I'm at least going to look up some slang lists and popular phrases so it doesn't look like I've been hittin' the gigglewater, see?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
^ the problem right there.

So pointing out the point is failing? Your sudden subtlety is somewhat shocking: didn't know you had that in you.

Oh, really? I read all the fic I could find for this on ao3 and while they didn't exactly make me feel like I was reading Wodehouse, I thought most of them were pretty good at trying.

Personally, I think it's more awkward when fic writers do try to capture Wodehouse's style, because he was brilliantly inventive and they are doomed to be nothing but his pale imitation.

+ 1

This so much. I rather read them talking without the slang but in a way that feels natural and having a nice flow to it than with some slang that is forcefully wedged into the sentences. A forced style like this can feel awkward and cringeworthy very fast.

Right? I would hardly expect it to look like Wodehouse no matter what. He was pretty brilliant.
I wrote one fic that was Wodehouse inspired, and that was one of the most difficult things I ever wrote.

I dunno. It's a given that most authors will fail to match Wodehouse, but I like for people to try. Man's reach should exceed his grasp and all that.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2016-03-20 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the opposite problem. Writers trytoo hard and craud fics with o. b. and slang. I prefer a modern contemporary style with a light sparkling of Woodhouse in characters' speech.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I read "a light spanking" at first, and was thinking that's exactly what most Wodehouse fic needs. Well, "light" is optional, but you see what I mean.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2016-03-21 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Spanking... m-mmm. Yes.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wodehouse was a genius. Most fan authors are not.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-20 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Get off AO3 and hit the J&W comm on LJ. Most of the fic is still there and you might be able to find some links to the old message boards and archives from the zine days.

Writing period dialogue and slang is tough even for professional authors. I can understand the frustration, but try to be fair to the bleaters.

old bean - is the one phrase I remember from the books.

We obviously have not been reading the same Wodehouse fanfic. The ones I've read all capture the style beautifully. Look here:
