Pretty much the entirety of Bachelorette by Bjork, Knee Socks by The Arctic Monkeys, and Bad Blood by Bastille.

Favorite lines include:

If you forget my name/you will go astray/like a killer whale trapped in a bay

You've got the lights on in the afternoon/ and the nights are drawn out long/ and you're kissing to cut through the gloom/ with a cough drop colored tongue

We were young and drinking in the park/ there was nowhere else to go/ and you said you'd always have my back/ oh, but how were we to know?/ And those are the days that bind us/ together, forever/ and these little things define us/ forever, forever

Joanna Newsom's Monkey and Bear is a work of lyrical genius:

Low’red in a genteel curtsy,
Bear shed the mantle of her diluvian shoulders
and, with a sigh,
she allowed the burden of belly to drop,
like an apron-full of boulders.

My all time favorite lyric is from Leonard Cohen's "Sisters of Mercy": oh you, who must leave everything that you cannot control. There's SO much characterization and history in those ten words, I'm floored every time.

Incidentally, that song also has if your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn, they will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem, which kills me.

Speaking of Leonard Cohen, he also wrote "Anthem," which contains my second-favorite lyrics: oh every heart to love will come, but like a refugee--ring the bells that still can ring; forget your perfect offering. there is a crack in everything; that's how the light gets in.

Everything off Vienna Teng's "Inland Territory" is genius and kills me. I'm particularly fond of this sudden burst of sunlight, and me with my umbrella, cross-indexing every weatherman's report! I was ready for the downslide, but not for spring to well up, this feeling calls for everything I can't afford to know is possible now. What do I do with a love that won't sit still? and she found him standing looking lost in the shadow of St. Stephen's cross.

Also, from the Mountain Goats: wake and rise and face the day and try to stop the day from staring back at me; busy hours for joyful hearts and maybe later head out to the pharmacy. Won't take the medication but it's good to have around, a kind and loving god won't let my small ship run aground!

I'm OBSESSED with the intelligence and emotion in the lyrics of Hamilton, and above all else, when Burr sings, in "Non-Stop," I'm taking my time watching the afterbirth of a nation. Like YOOOOO

......I'm babbling

The Mountain Goats have really fantastic lyrics. Have you ever listened to John Vanderslice? He did an EP with The Mountain Goats called Moon Colony Bloodbath that was excellent.

This line from Zip City by the Drive-By Truckers fucking kills me every time:

Your brother was the first-born, got ten fingers and ten toes
And it’s a damn good thing ‘cause he needs all twenty
To keep the closet door closed

This song always makes me think of driving around backroads in the boonies of the boonies with my mom and dad and brother listening to Best of Warren Zevon and my mom trying to turn the volume down strategically whenever there were swears. I love Warren Zevon SO much.

What's my favorite lyrics tend to vary a lot, but here are some.

Young hearts light their own funeral pyres a wildfire the heart’s always keen to endure I know the yearning will always remain I know I’ll always be asking for more</> "Young Love" by Moto Boy.

Hold me for a while
Then I'm gunna have to leave
I have filled my head with hate
Right from the start it was too late

Hold me for a while
Then I'm gunna have to leave
Disaster flirts with me
I feel alive when knuckles bleed

"Hold Me" by Weeping Willows

Not high brow at all, I just love the way it sounds/feels when I sing along with it, but:

Prince and pauper, junior and whopper
World made out of silver and copper
Out of my own violation, I took a change of position
--King of Spain, Moxy Früvous

Also
Mine, immaculate dream made breath and skin
I've been waiting for you
Signed, with a home tattoo,
Happy birthday to you was created for you
--Come Undone, Duran Duran

With this one, love the last verse best, but it doesn't make sense out of context. The song is "The Jolly Butcher" by Great Big Sea.

Well he called for a candle to light their way to bed
And when he had her in the room these words to her he said,
"A sovereign I will give to you, for to embrace your charms
And all that night, that fair young maid, lied in the butchers' arms

Oh, Early the next morning be sure he went his way
He looked unto that fair young maid and unto her did say,
"That sovereign that I gave to you, do not think me strange,
Well that sovereign that I gave to you will you give me back me change!"

Well about a 12 months later he roved out once more
And he went into the tavern where he'd often been before
He wasn't in there very long when his fair maid he did see
And she brought forth a baby three months old and placed it on his knee

When he saw the baby, he began to curse and swear
And he said unto that fair young maid, "Why did you bring him here?!"
"Well he is your own, kind sir", she said, "Do not think me strange,
Well that sovereign that you gave to me, I gives you back your change!!"

You told me yes
You held me high
And I believed,
When you told that lie.

I played solider,
You played king,
And struck me down,
When I kissed that ring.

You lost that right,
To hold that crown,
I built you up,
But you let me down.

So when you fall,
I'll take my turn,
And fan the flames,
As your blazes burn.

I'd have given all you see
If you could turn around your dream and come back to me

I'd have had to let you go
Chasing shadows but only catch an afterglow
-Afterglow, Skyhill

I have a lot of others that I really like, but this one, the last line especially, always sticks out for me.
