In spite of my doctor insisting that she could operate at an in-network hospital, and despite the fact that the appointment last week was completely useless and we could have figured this out two months ago and actually pushing the surgery back two months already, today I found out she actually can't operate in any of the hospitals my insurance will cover.

So this means that I have to find a new doctor and start all over again. And I wasted 50 bucks plus whatever I spent on the blood tests that are now useless. And who knows when the surgery will be.

I honestly broke down sobbing today. I'm just so tired of waiting and dealing with pain. I'm so very frustrated.

Ugh, I'm so sorry about that. I kind of know how you feel, I'm going through something a bit similar looking for help for my medical issues too. I really really hope that things work out for you soon and your next doctor will treat you much better *hugs*

Will they really not let you carry blood tests results to the next doctor?

Our system is so broken and I'm sorry you're going through this. :( *hugs if wanted*

Yes, but the blood tests were pre-surgery hormone tests. They have to be done within a month of surgery I believe. So they'll have to be done again.

They may have to be done again, but at least this stuff is in your records and, hopefully, you won't have to start everything from scratch. So, at least there's a little bit of a silver lining? D:

True. I'm just frustrated because I'm sick of pain and I'm job searching and it is going to be hard starting a new job not knowing when my surgery will be. And if I have to move for a job I'll have to find a third doctor if this doesn't get done soon enough.

I'm sorry to hear that. Can you bring the results of the blood tests with you to the new doctor? Especially if you paid for them they should really be yours and your doctor should hand them over to you if she hasn't already. Or were they bloodtests to check if the surgery could be performed safely? (My father takes an anticoagulant; he had a surgery last year and it took a week of bloodtests to see if the anticoagulant had left his system until he could actually have the surgery.)

The blood tests were pre-surgery hormone level testing, so they'll have to be done again.

Ugh, that's awful.

I can't believe that, all of these years after so-called reform, people still have to deal with this sort of bullshit. There should have been something in the ACA to do away with this in-network/out-of-network nonsense, seeing as it so often renders insurance useless.

I'm sorry. :-/ I hope things get sorted out for you soon.

ACA was a step in the right direction but now we're at the awkward halfway point...worst of both worlds in some ways. :/

It's like...you have to have insurance, so more people are insured, but the insurance often sucks, so they might as well still not have it.

It's like shifting piles of dirt around.

That is me. I used to not have insurance, so I could go to the health clinic down the street from me. I was seen by trainees/interns and often had long waits, but I had health care. Then I was forced to get insurance. And my deductible is thousands of dollars, so I can't afford to actually use my insurance. (I call it "hit by a bus insurance" because if I am hit by a bus or something like that, I'll have something at least, but I can't actually use it otherwise.)

So I went from having health care that I paid $15 for every time I needed it to having no health care that I pay $100 a month for. Yay?

ugh...what's the point of having insurance if you have a huge deductible and it doesn't actually cover any useful services? :/

Re: Rant thread

So I don't get in trouble from the government for not having insurance?

An honest answer is the "hit by a bus" one. If something major happens to me and I get breast cancer like my mother which will never be detected due to not getting mammograms, but I digress or I have to be hospitalized or something like that, at least a huge chunk of it would be covered. I wouldn't even mind being forced to have insurance if I could still use the health clinic down the street from me for the regular health issues I have. But they don't accept patients who have insurance. (Which makes sense, I guess, as a lot of it is charity based and if they don't have to spend money on people with insurance, they can spend it on the people without. But it still sucks, as I am still poor even if I do have insurance now.)

Re: Rant thread

So what's the cost for you to go to a clinic if you're sick? What about annual basic checkups (GP, gyn, vision, dental)?
meredith44: Can't talk, I'm reading (Default)

Re: Rant thread

[personal profile] meredith44 2016-03-24 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I get one well visit to the GP and gyn a year. However if they have to run any tests or do anything extra, I pay for that. I don't go to a doctor/clinic if I'm sick, because I would have to pay the whole thing. Which I would think runs a substantial amount. I have no idea though. I pay the whole thing for eye care as well. I went through WalMart a couple of years ago, and I bought extra contacts then, which I'm trying to stretch out as much as possible, because I really can't afford to go back. And I didn't even get dental through the free clinic, so I haven't been in 14 years now. (Theoretically I can/could go to the local dental school, but while they are cheaper than a "real" dentist, they still cost more than I can afford.)

Re: Rant thread

So basically you have expensive insurance and are still required to pay for the majority of your care out of pocket.

And people wonder why we say insurance companies are greedy and the healthcare system is a mess.

I'm sorry :(
meredith44: Can't talk, I'm reading (Default)

Re: Rant thread

[personal profile] meredith44 2016-03-25 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
You've got it! Well, except that this is the cheapest insurance option I could have. I could be paying twice what I am now and then paying $50-$75 copays per doctor visit, which was the other insurance option I had.

The healthcare system is definitely a mess. Although I actually wouldn't even mind paying for the health care if I made a living wage, so there is that aspect too. (I just got notification that after working for the same company for a decade continuously and almost 14 years in total that my hourly rate was going up because of the increase in minimum wage in New York State meaning they now had to pay me the new minimum for someone with my education level. Yay?)

And thanks.
