you could call yourself heteroflexible if you wanted something that foregrounds your basic preference for dudes and is pithier than 'bisexual and heteroromatic'

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

No.

Don't encourage more new labels.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

It's not new. It's been around for at least 7 years.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is relatively new. You don't see it in everyday use. Let's keep it that way.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep it that way as much as you like, it's not really worth the time arguing with you about. I was pointing out that it is in fact not new and older than most Tumblr terms, that's all. Have fun not using words or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
edgy flounce is edgy lol

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you misunderstand me. I'm declining to argue because it's not worth it. My aim here was to clarify a point, that's all. What anon chooses to do or not do with their terms is up to them.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, they're not flouncing?

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-03-23 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
why, specifically?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because a lot of us are sick of the kreeeative ways people label themselves to appear unique, probably?

I don't really get it though. It's not hurting you, and it's also not about you.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It does and it is. The problem with the multi-label phenomenon is that it's white noise. When people are still busting their asses to achieve basic civil rights, it's frustrating to see the issues devolve into making sure that every stray thought or feeling that a human could have is assigned a twee name and an identity checkbox. It's a distraction and trivializes the efforts of people who are trying to make life outside of tumblr more liveable.

Also, it's precious as fuck.

So you have an issue that isn't actually "sick of the kreeeative ways people label themselves" because that makes it sound like your only problem is you don't like it and want to police how people label themselves.

The issue you bring up makes sense, though I have to wonder how big of a force that actually is outside of tumblr.

Twitter has been around for only 10 years

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
So let's not talk mention it okay? People make up the weirdest shit.

Re: Twitter has been around for only 10 years

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Not even remotely on the same level, but nice try.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
also DA
I still don't understand what's "bad" about more labels. It's human nature to want to categorize things as specific as possible, so that they can be more accurately defined.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
ngl I side-eye some of the tumblr stuff, but I like heteroflexible because like, it's 100% easy to comprehend the meaning of the word from its roots, and is therefore useful in actually communicating information without giving people a lecture

you consider yourself basically straight for the purposes of your dating life and seeking RL partners, but you have theoretical gay Pants Feelings about really hot ladies in certain fictional or pornographic situations, because sexuality is complicated? sure, heteroflexible sounds like that thing

or maybe OP is just bi and hasn't fully figured it out yet, but that seems kind of rude and presumptuous to insist on when we don't know her at all

When labels become non-intuitive and too specific in an unhelpful way, it's time to stop.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Making new categories is, whatever. It's the social baggage - or perceived social baggage - that comes with it that is obnoxious. You can call yourself demisexual, and I don't give a fuck until you start saying that makes you different from "normal straight people", or queer, or special somehow. Making some labels is akin to me making a label for myself because I have am 5'3", or making a label for myself because I prefer to center-part my hair, or because I can't whistle. None of these things are important, and if I tried to base my identity on that - and go around telling people this is part of my identity - yeah, people are going to tell me I need to chill the fuck out.

Categories can be helpful for some people - like gay people, who use that label because it has been forced upon them, and they need support and community, as well as the ability to meet other same-gendered people for romantic reasons.

Categories become really dumb and pointless when they don't describe anything useful.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Over-labelling people into tiny little boxes is weird as hell and 100% useless.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
DA. Then get rid of the stupid distinction between orientation and romantation or whatevs. Heteroflexible is by far the older term. Also you seem weirdly invested in this.
