I've read the Thrawn trilogy and the first few NJO books, where she's sick and Ben exists. Are there other books that go into their romance? Because I'd like to experience it, but I don't like comics as a story medium so I'm hoping there's more than just that one graphic novel I know of where they got married.

There is also the Thrawn Duology. That's where the actual romance starts.

Survivor's Quest by Timothy Zahn is probably the best about their romance because it's after the Duology.

But there are few other books that show her personality. I loved any of the others by Zahn (Choices of One and Allegiance). Plus, even though I, Jedi focuses on Corran Horn, I still like that book in general.

Mara Jade was a good character when written by Zahn, and absolute garbage shit after Heir to the Empire. I'm glad she's dead and noncanon now.

I know that feel. Like, I really really want an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, but I know it will hurt me if anything contradicts the Jedi Apprentice books or JJM's Kenobi.

I'm still pressed we got stupid Ben Solo instead of Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin.

TBH I'd be ok with gay/bi Luke but I'm a little put off at the wave of fans TFA brought in who are actively celebrating a woman character being erased just because she was Luke's love interest. It reeks of the early to mid 2000s' "get rid of those icky women who are in the way of my yaoi" attitude.

Like, what are these fans going to do if we find out Luke had a woman lover who isn't Mara? Hope she's dead too?

I for one, would start popping popcorn and eagerly await the oncoming explosion of online screaming.

I have just learned that George Lucas stopped bothering with the Internet sometime around 2000, and now I may have discovered part of the reasons why.

The way the fandom treats Lucas is shameful. Even if you don't like the prequels, he gave you Star Wars in the first place. Stop being an ass to him and stop making it personal and talking as if he's a bad human for making (arguably) bad movies.

Agreed. Tbh, I'm kind of bummed that Disney apparently bought out his original script for movie 7, just so they could go and do their own thing.
Flawed as the prequels might have been, they were still Lucas' artistic vision. I didn't really feel like TFA had much vision at all :/

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think that TFA's vision was "Let's make a movie that's actually enjoyable to watch and features protagonists that are likable enough so that if we have them fight over a pit of lava, the audience won't be cheering for the lava to win." It's a stark departure from Lucas's vision for the prequels, to be sure, but it seems to have gone over fairly well with the general public.

Besides, it's kind of hard to top the ridiculous pseudoscience, unbelievable dialogue, endless political debates and racism of the prequels when the GOP primaries are right there.

You realize he actively went out of his way to prevent gay fanfiction from being written and that there were lawsuits about it, right?

Wait, what, no, I had no idea. All I knew was that some fans took it personally that he made movies they didn't like and went out of their way to attack him personally that. I hate that for the same reason that personal attacks on Rowling was one of the things that soured me to the Harry Potter fandom. But ugh, no, I did not know he did that, I'm going to have to google tomorrow and find some links because that is gross.

Also, he wouldn't allow Carrie Fisher to wear a bra with her iconic white gown because "there's no gravity/underwear in space".

The man is a creep.

Yeah, I just wish they'd worked her in somehow :(

I mean, Luke was missing for a pretty long time, they still could if they wanted to. Though it would be weird if they brought in that one aspect of the EU and not any others.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I never could stand her or any of the children. I'm happy with the new canon.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I miss Mara.

(I stopped reading any of the EU stuff after she died, anyway.)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Mara Jade and her romance with Luke always rubbed me the wrong way because he's just so asexual by the time ROTJ came around and I feel like he'd have far more important things to do at that point. Like what he was apparently doing in TFA, for one thing.

So yeah, I'm glad she's gone. Fans of her need to let it go already and stop bringing her up as a reason to shit on headcanons.

Their romance wasn't overly sexual though? I mean, yes, they had a kid. But we don't have a lot of romantic scenes the way we do with Han and Leia. It was a different, more subtle sort of romance that I think was suited to a character like Luke.

Whatever point you had is moot. Sex and romance, regardless of how little there is, is still present. I simply don't see Luke doing that.

yeah the farm boy always dreaming of adventures, being a hero and getting the girl. yeeeah.

Yeah me too, although I was never interested in anything beyond the movies. In my head, none of it was canon aside from the six films.
