Neighbor dog

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Neighbor has a pit bull chained in backyard. It got tangled on a stump. Scary neighbours are not home and animal control is off duty. Should I risk trying to untangle it? I know even normally friendly dogs can become aggressive when chained up and confronted by a stranger. The dog is barking a lot but it isn't super hot out.

I'd leave it for a while. Too big a risk for too small a reward. Call someone later if the neighbors still don't come back.

I wouldn't, no. You don't know this dog well and this dog doesn't know you, I take it? Also, dynamics are different without the owners there and when you're in its territory. If it's not in immediate danger, let it go and maybe give your neighbors a heads up about what happened when they get back. Though frankly if they're the kind of people who'll chain a dog in the yard, they probably won't care.

I can't stand people who fucking chain their dogs outside, even if the weather isn't awful.

Mte. My shitbasket neighbors did that, the poor pup was so lonesome and bored.

If animal control is off duty (?) maybe you can call the cops and report it, if it seems like it's in danger or being treated cruelly.

But otherwise, I suppose nothing... If you don't know a dog, it can be dangerous to get too close.

yeah I would not approach it but I absolutely would keep an eye on it and call the cops if it ever looks like there's abuse going on. and if it's still tangled up when animal control goes on-duty that is also an option though idk what your animal control does with dogs :/

also who the fuck leaves their dog outside while they're not home? especially since it's in the back yard which makes me think it's not playing guard-dog duty, and since it's tied up I assume there's no doggy door.

(also I agree with the anon who said chaining dogs up is a Bad Thing. It can be dangerous for the dog.)

poor thing :(

I would never approach a dog who is home alone. My dog was the sweetest guy in the world, and even he growled at our neighbors, who he knew well and loved very much, when they tried to usher him inside and close the door when we accidentally left it open, once upon a time. He was conflicted, but he'd be damned if he was going to let them up our walk.

And if they're "scary neighbors".... doesn't bode well for how they train their dog.

I hope you called the cops, or got a hold of AC. Next time it happens, they're'll be a record of this instance.

I hate people who abuse animals. So wrong for so many reasons.
