Sounds like more of a feminist Sunday School lesson than a film.

MTE. And while objectively, I know there's absolutely nothing wrong with having a checklist of things you want to see in a movie, something about lists like this get under my skin. Probably because none of the above guarantees a movie that isn't garbage.

Checking off actors you enjoy, good direction, realistic dialogue, nice sets, good effects, etc.: those are the making of a good movie. "OMG, two women don't live for romance, but can still be shippable AND one of them gets a soapbox speech?!!!" can exist independent of all other quality.

This seems like a really knee jerk, boring reaction to someone discussing specific aspects of a film.

+1

That's like thinking "two women have a conversation about something besides a man" is the main plot of a movie just because someone said it passed the Bechdel Test.

my gf looooves this movie. I thought the acting and writing was pretty bad, but the concept was kinda interesting.

OP LET'S BE BEST FRIENDS! I fucking loved that movie. It was dumb and clunky but it was ultimately about female friendships and had the one time that the "Oh, our tragic love cannot be" trope actually worked (which, omg he is in a position of authority over you and just a bit too old, GOOD CALL, YOU GUYS)

Yayyyy! *fistbump* I got curious and read the books too, and guess what? She also has a broody smouldering love interest she ends up breaking up with because... gasp... it's not her responsibility to fix his life! I'm sold!

This is such a cranky series but the lead is actually, genuinely a good role model while still being super likeable.

The way you worded this secret makes this movie sound at least conceptually interesting to me! Though movies like this also tend to come with the sort of embarrassing drama I hate, especially if it involves humiliation :/

Never actually seen it, for the record.

Also, I do like vampires, in concept. What are the ones in this story like?

There's like, different classes of them if I recall? Like halfbloods and evil corrupt vampires and others. It's been a while.

Yeah from what I remember: they are scandavian (idk if based on a real myth or made up) vampires, pure bloods are royalty and have like, human familiars, dhampyrs (half vampires) play a big roll, and vampires can turn into evil nosferatu -like monsters for... some reason...

its been a while for me too

I watched the first half of it and it was - not good, but interesting and watchable. I definitely shipped the main chars. Main reason I stopped watching it is i was really bored by the stupid ass male romantic leads.

I enjoyed this movie. I thought it was a good popcorn flick, something to sit back, not think, and just enjoy. The soundtrack is also amazing. I love Chvrches cover of "Bela Lugosi's Dead"

I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND ALSO THE BOOKS SO MUCH HIGH-FIVE OP

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
This was a super fun movie! I mean, it was terribly clunky and tried to shoehorn in way too much backstory (while also leaving out important details of worldbuilding) but the main characters were awesome.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
This makes me want to watch the movie.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it too! Some of my friends are fans of the books and say they're even better, both in entertainment value and actually being well-written. I don't know if I have the attention span for a book series that long, but you might want to check it out if you haven't already.

I didn't enjoy the movie that much but I really liked the book series it was based on. The main reason I liked the book series was the relationship between the two main female characters. Their friendship was the heart and soul of the series and I loved that. I also liked the spin-off book series (Bloodlines) in which there were also really strong relationships between the female characters. I think Richelle Mead (the author of both series) is just really good at depicting relationships between female characters. At least when it comes to her YA stuff. I haven't read her non-YA work.
