I'm American, from the East Coast. I call the meal eaten in the evening "dinner," but several of my friends say "supper."

Someone told me that in some places "dinner" is eaten in the middle of the day (what I would call lunch), so it makes sense for those people to call the evening one something else. But my friends who say "supper" call the midday meal "lunch" like I do.

So, what do you use? Dinner or supper? Is dinner eaten at midday or in the evening?

I'm from Massachusetts, and I use "dinner" for the evening meal and "lunch" for the midday one. I've never used "supper" for anything.

Texan here, and dinner is the evening meal. Sometimes my older relatives will call it supper interchangeably, but dinner has always been the evening meal.

Dinner. I've lived in the US South 90% of the time and never heard a single soul call it supper.

I use dinner (from South Carolina and living in Oklahoma). I don't think I ever use supper.

I usually say dinner. BUt if I'm eating really late at night I'll call it supper.

west coast person here. I've only heard supper used in the context of my bf talking about the merits of hobbits.

I think I've only encountered that in books. Is it regional or archaic?

I'm Midwest/Plains, and for me lunch has always been lunch. And while I lean toward dinner for the evening meal, my grandmother always said supper and my mom does most of the time, so every now and again I do too. Usually when I'm home.

My mom spent a few childhood years in Alabama, and I spent a few adult years there, where I think supper was probably said more often.

It's pretty evenly split between saying dinner and supper for our evening meal, with maybe a slight edge towards dinner. Of course, we eat dinner at about 4 or 5 pm in our household.

I'm from the Philadelphia suburbs and I've always said dinner, but my childhood next-door-neighbors were originally from Central PA and they were supper people. "Dinner" was the midday meal to them. (Oh, the arguments this caused!)

Dinner, whether at midday or in the evening, is the biggest meal of the day. If the evening meal is small I call it 'tea'.

Supper sounds very old fashioned to me.

I never heard anyone use the term "supper" sersiously until I moved to southeast Tennessee, and even then it's used really rarely.

I'm from Iowa, and I think the two terms tend to be used interchangeably out here. My family generally refer to it as dinner, but we've used "supper" every once in a while, too.

My impression - as an English-speaker native to the US - is that calling the midday meal "dinner" and the evening meal "supper" is a historical thing, and also that calling them "lunch" and "supper" respectively has also been a thing that's happened.

For what it's worth, I call them "lunch" and "dinner".

I do occasionally hear "supper" used for the evening meal, especially by older people and/or in a stylized context, but I don't think I've ever heard "dinner" used for the midday meal IRL.

Dinner for either evening meal or traditional primary meal. (Mid-day holiday meal, usually when I'm visiting.) Lunch otherwise.

When I was living in the dorms at my parochial school (it was required of all students unless you were a certain Favorite Son) we called it supper. But I haven't heard "supper" in 20 years.

I live in Massachusetts, I say breakfast, lunch, and dinner (with the occasional second breakfast thrown in for good measure). I've got family in Colorado and the South and they say lunch and dinner, too. Don't think I've heard anyone say supper outside of TV.

East Coast here and I've always called the midday meal lunch and the evening meal dinner, but my grandmother uses supper interchangeably with dinner.

So I'm Minnesotan and we use dinner and supper interchangably for the evening meal. But my mother, who grew up on a North Dakota farm, uses dinner to mean "the biggest meal of the day" and will use it for lunch if lunch is going to be a big meal. It annoys me so much, but all my relatives on that side use it the same way.

East Coast Canadian (Nova Scotia) and we use supper--although sometimes it's dinner. But dinner can also be the mid-day meal (especially if it's big/special) but more often lunch. Supper is not unusual here.

East Coast US too, and I always hear/use lunch for the midday meal. Usually it's dinner for the evening meal, but I've also heard dinner and supper used interchangeably.

I call the main meal for the evening dinner, supper would be like a late evening snack but I only ever had that at my nan's because she would have dinner ready at 5:00 pm, so we'd need a small sandwich or something later on.

Dinner. I had a neighbor when I was a kid that said supper, and I feel like there were one or two other people from my childhood that called it that, but I haven't heard anyone say it in probably 20 years.

This is probably an asshole thing to say, but supper just sounds so white trashy to me.
