Supper or dinner
(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)Someone told me that in some places "dinner" is eaten in the middle of the day (what I would call lunch), so it makes sense for those people to call the evening one something else. But my friends who say "supper" call the midday meal "lunch" like I do.
So, what do you use? Dinner or supper? Is dinner eaten at midday or in the evening?

My mom spent a few childhood years in Alabama, and I spent a few adult years there, where I think supper was probably said more often.
Re: Supper or dinner
(Anonymous) 2016-04-05 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)It's pretty evenly split between saying dinner and supper for our evening meal, with maybe a slight edge towards dinner. Of course, we eat dinner at about 4 or 5 pm in our household.

For what it's worth, I call them "lunch" and "dinner".
I do occasionally hear "supper" used for the evening meal, especially by older people and/or in a stylized context, but I don't think I've ever heard "dinner" used for the midday meal IRL.
