(It's a Delta Serena fountain pen, medium nib.)

I actually laughed out loud at "my handwriting is shit and this was a complete waste of my money". That sucks, OP!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
If you can afford it and it made you happy, why not?

There's nothing wrong with getting yourself a treat from time to time if it's within your budget. :-)

Also, maybe it will inspire you to improve your handwriting, or take pleasure in it when you have to write something by hand.

Alternately, if you find it no longer pleases you after a while, you can always give it to someone who needs to write a lot for their job, and will get use and happiness out of it.

Well said.

LOL! I bought an inexpensive fountain pen because I thought it would be cool to write all fancy... and my handwriting is terrible, too. Turns out I just don't have the patience and/or coordination to write neatly, so my sympathies, OP.

A good pen is never a waste.

Fountain pens are so cool~~~

I bought a fountain pen five years ago that I've only seriously used twice. No regrets though, because I have a fountain pen and it's even got a quill attachment!

It's not a waste if you dig it, OP. Plus, I would argue there is no bad handwriting with a fountain pen, because the pen itself increases the fanciness by a factor of 1000.

So....practice your handwriting until it looks good, duh! :)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I have a couple of fountain pens I like using but have never gotten one that's over $40 yet. I remember noticing one I like in an anime series after I had bought it and thinking that was pretty neat. (LAMY Safari in Gatchaman Crowds)

Anyways... if you ever do get into handwriting practice, journaling, or letter writing or something, at least now you have a nice pen for it?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, but it's a pretty thing. And you could always practice. My handwriting is pretty bad, plus I am a lefty, but I adore my fountain pens.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Do you draw at all? I got a fountain pen to do sketches, it works really nicely for that.

Depends on your drawing needs, I imagine.

I have a personal art style that requires a fine tip on a gel or felt-tip pen, and fountain pens are never that fine. I still like fountain pens, but more for writing (which I don't do that often anyway) than for art reasons.

You could get a needlepoint custom grind... If you felt it was worth it (bet it's not). I've always felt most sketch paper is too toothy to feel pleasant with the nib, and too absorbent for the ink.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Different strokes for different folks. I hate felt pens I feel like they bleed all over the place and I can't get a sharp line.

I think everyone has a 'bought someone because they thought it would be cool and turned out to be a waste of money' story. :P

Buy yourself a handwriting course and go through it, with the pen or with a different one to save on ink. I would recommend these: http://www.amazon.com/Spencerian-Copybooks-without-Theory-Penmanship/dp/0880620951 I was forced to go through the first and second copybook of those as a child and although I hated it at the time, it DID teach me to write a very nice hand for which I'm quite grateful now.

Who cares how terrible your handwriting is? Have fun using your pen. A lot of people who love and enjoy fountain pens have bad handwriting, including many popular pen review blogs. They're not for people with amazing handwriting, they're just different kinds of pens (albeit usually more expensive). If you want to improve your handwriting (always a worthwhile venture whether you use a fountain pen or a biro), this article I think was the most helpful I've read recently, Joy of Flex part 2 is also helpful even if you're not concerned with copperplate.

DA That's an awesome article, anon! have bookmarked.

It's a lovely thing, though, anon, so enjoy it anyway!

I second trying to improve your handwriting. And if you have no real motivation working on you handwriting, you could pretend to practise writing a letter to the celeb in question - one that'd be pleasant to look at and read!

OP, you might change nibs. My handwriting is godfuckingawful, but if I switch to something like an italic or stub nib, it adds a certain character to my handwriting that, well, it ain't classical calligraphy, but it's actually pretty to look at.

Other tips if you do want to improve: try moving from the shoulder instead of the wrist (think about writing on a black or white board!).

Write the alphabet 2-3 times every day. That's it. Just abcde etc. I find that just doing that is enough to loosen up my handwriting.

My school forced us to use fountain pens and learn how to write nicely when we were all about 9 years old, but I've never needed to use one again since I graduated and now my handwriting has gone to shit. It's all about practice, OP.
