Re: Redemption

I'm not totally invested in the character but I think Kylo Ren has to redeem himself. He'll probably die, but considering how much Han and Leia want(ed) to save him, I think it has to be done in some way, especially considering the ongoing theme of redemption in Star Wars.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this, plus I want to see the shitstorm that happens when the tumblrinas' vision of what they want the character to be (a cardboard cutout MRA stand-in) gets blown to pieces.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
this does not mesh with the rather odd and expansive variety of Ren stans I've observed, but I can tell you have Opinions.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Because that's much more prevalent. Mainstream nerd sites are writing it, not just some fringe people on tumblr. And their opinions are fine, because the MRA thing is ridiculous.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
lol for real. I wasted about three minutes of my life reading an article about how Kylo Ren represents white privilege and is the equivalent of a white male school shooter. I can't wait for Star Wars to bask in his white boy feelings (because you know that'll come) just to piss them off.

He is a white guy and he did murder a bunch of kids at the Jedi training academy. So, yeah, essentially.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-20 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Kids at the Jedi academy is fanon due to people mixing it up with Anakin. He did kill the other apprentices, but there's no hard canon that Luke Skywalker was doing the same thing as the old Jedi order.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
So what makes you so angry about that considering...well, it did happen. The buzzwords?

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
what, the white male privilege?

where?

plus, this is a universe where "the dark side" literally exists and that is literally why Kylo Ren is the way he is. comparing it to real life social issues is totally batshit

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Did you skip over the 'murdered young jedi' bits on purpose?

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
did you skip over how retarded it is to compare that to white male privilege and school shootings in the US?

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's not about what he did, it's about why he did it.

Tumblr users who compare Kylo to white men who open fire in American schools are very clear about not perpetuating the belief that the white American men have any kind of trauma or mental condition that led them to do it. They are perfectly sane, generally content individuals who do it because of entitlement about some tiny thing like a girl rejecting them.

But that's not Kylo. Right now Tumblr is dismissing his motive as being a spoiled brat with daddy issues, which fits their white male shooter narrative nicely. But it ignores the whole influence of the Force that you can't apply to real life, the hints that this has been used by Snoke to manipulate and brainwash him, and the possibility that maybe, just maybe those "daddy issues" aren't so petty after all -- but noooo, we can't have that, that would require worse than they want to believe their precious Han and Leia are capable of.

Oh and if anyone sees this and replies, I'm pretty sure they're going to miss the point and say something sarcastic like "Ohhhh, yes that TOTALLY makes what he did okay then" so to get it out of the way: I never said that it did, I'm only saying why it's stupid to compare Kylo Ren to real life school shooters, especially as Tumblr sees them.

Thank you, and yes, agreed. I got tired very quickly of all the "lol emo Crylo Ren, typical cis white MRA" in this fandom.

If the character had been written or acted with that level of nuance, you might have a point. But he wasn't, so you don't. You are, of course, entitled to any head canons that float your boat. That's all this is, though. A head canon that makes you feel better about the character.

Re: Redemption

[personal profile] fishnchips 2016-04-19 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
He absolutely was acted with that level of nuance. And he was also written like that to a point - you just didn't pay any attention to the subtext.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You're grasping for straws and calling it subtlety. The movie was fun, but not as nearly deep as you'd have to pretend it is to justify your interpretation of the character. The bubblegum wrappers aren't a secret message and Martin Freeman isn't supporting Johnlock with his microexpressions.
fishnchips: (Eh)

Re: Redemption

[personal profile] fishnchips 2016-04-19 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody said it was deep. Thing is, what the other anon said is in the movie, and not even in a subtle way. If you missed it, that's your problem, but people like you are the ones grasping at straws to keep their unfitting analogies alive just because you apparently slept through key scenes/missed massively obvious and unsubtle implications/don't know how acting works.

Whatever helps you keep the dream alive. Ron Weasley is so Dumbledore!

The people like you are the ones who seem to think the movie is deep. Every Tumblr essay talks about how subversive and brilliant it was to make its villain in the mold of the true terror we face today, the cishet white American male. Which is just lmao. Nobody who worked on the film was trying to make the grand social commentary you want them to be making. They were just trying to make characters general audiences would enjoy and have "feels" about.

I have no doubt that it will be done. I just don't want any easy handwaving of his bad actions

I'd rather he have to live and earn his forgiveness. They've already done the death equals redemption thing with Anakin/Vader. Now have him redeem himself and turn back to the light, but still have to stand trial for his crimes and earn the forgiveness of others.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd actually like to see this with General Hux. I know realistically that it would never happen. He's a cookie-cutter villain who will end up being killed (hopefully in 9 rather than 8). I wouldn't be surprised if Kylo's the one who ends up killing him in the end.

But, according to his backstory, Hux was raised in the Unknown Regions under heavy pro-Imerpial propaganda. I would find it fascinating if they could show the Space Hitler having a change of heart. I don't know how it would work but if Hux was exposed to alien cultures and they did something to prove that they're not whatever the propaganda said they were, I think it would be interesting to see his ideas change and how he dealt with it.

But I'd even take Hux just being redeemed in that Snoke turns on him so he stabs Snoke in the back. Fuck the Resistance; he only helps to get his own retribution.

Obviously, none of that will happen with such a minor character but I'd love to see it.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of me wants to see him redeemed for Leia and Luke's sake and because I want the Light side to be stronger and I want a Jedi Skywalker to follow Luke.

But part of me wants to see him go full-dark. I want to see him just nuke everything. Stop waffling and completely commit to the dark side, kill Snoke and end up being the baddest bad that Rey has to take out.

I'm really curious to see how they'll play out the redemption storyline, since that is a recurring theme in Star Wars.
