Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Characters you want to see redeem themselves. How do you think it could happen? Would you like it in fic but not in canon? Anyone beyond redeeming for you?

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not totally invested in the character but I think Kylo Ren has to redeem himself. He'll probably die, but considering how much Han and Leia want(ed) to save him, I think it has to be done in some way, especially considering the ongoing theme of redemption in Star Wars.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this, plus I want to see the shitstorm that happens when the tumblrinas' vision of what they want the character to be (a cardboard cutout MRA stand-in) gets blown to pieces.

Re: Redemption

this does not mesh with the rather odd and expansive variety of Ren stans I've observed, but I can tell you have Opinions.

lol for real. I wasted about three minutes of my life reading an article about how Kylo Ren represents white privilege and is the equivalent of a white male school shooter. I can't wait for Star Wars to bask in his white boy feelings (because you know that'll come) just to piss them off.

I have no doubt that it will be done. I just don't want any easy handwaving of his bad actions

I'd rather he have to live and earn his forgiveness. They've already done the death equals redemption thing with Anakin/Vader. Now have him redeem himself and turn back to the light, but still have to stand trial for his crimes and earn the forgiveness of others.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd actually like to see this with General Hux. I know realistically that it would never happen. He's a cookie-cutter villain who will end up being killed (hopefully in 9 rather than 8). I wouldn't be surprised if Kylo's the one who ends up killing him in the end.

But, according to his backstory, Hux was raised in the Unknown Regions under heavy pro-Imerpial propaganda. I would find it fascinating if they could show the Space Hitler having a change of heart. I don't know how it would work but if Hux was exposed to alien cultures and they did something to prove that they're not whatever the propaganda said they were, I think it would be interesting to see his ideas change and how he dealt with it.

But I'd even take Hux just being redeemed in that Snoke turns on him so he stabs Snoke in the back. Fuck the Resistance; he only helps to get his own retribution.

Obviously, none of that will happen with such a minor character but I'd love to see it.

Part of me wants to see him redeemed for Leia and Luke's sake and because I want the Light side to be stronger and I want a Jedi Skywalker to follow Luke.

But part of me wants to see him go full-dark. I want to see him just nuke everything. Stop waffling and completely commit to the dark side, kill Snoke and end up being the baddest bad that Rey has to take out.

I'm really curious to see how they'll play out the redemption storyline, since that is a recurring theme in Star Wars.

I want to see Loki's redemption and then probable death happen, paving the way for the inevitable Young Avengers recast.

This will probably upset everybody, *especially* the people tired of Loki-woobie stans.

*note, I'm being something of an asshole. I happen to like Loki, but not in super woobie state.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to see Loki's redemption too. I feel cliched saying that since the Loki-stans have given Loki fans a bad name, and have scorched everything in their path of Loki-woobieness. But, having watched the movies, he just seems so perfectly set up for one and it would be a great end for his arc.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly loved what was done with him in the comics from Siege through to Agent of Asgard (although Mighty Thor seems to be off the rails again) and if they could approximate even a fraction of that, I'm there.

I'm just kind of glad I came in late on that particular fandom and missed the worst of the scorched earth. Lately, yeah, there's still some woobie shit. But there's been some interesting character discussions, too, and I've seen some good fic - like actually, genuinely good fic out of it.

I love redemption arcs. But redemption has to be earned. Unless the character dies, for a redemption arc to work for me I have to see them repentant and then work to do good things and earn their redemption.

Re: Redemption

[personal profile] sarillia 2016-04-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Sometimes people try for a redemption arc by just having bad things happen to the character and to me it comes off more like the character has resigned themselves to their new place in life rather than actually thinking about what they've done in the past and working towards being better. Like they've decided they're not powerful enough to get away with being an asshole anymore rather than learning why they shouldn't no matter what the circumstances.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't you know there is no such thing as redemption. Tumblr has decreed this. Commit a single dubious act for any reason and you deserve to die in a very horrific way because NO FORGIVENESS EVAR!!!!

I hate this outlook so much. And the people who act like this consider themselves advocates of human rights who purport human decency.

like, no. you are the opposite of that.

Re: Redemption

Ugh, this drives me crazy. I know that some characters are unlikely to ever be redeemed, especially if they don't want to be, but I'd hate to live in a world where there isn't the possibility of redemption for everyone, no matter how bad. If that's the case, then there's no reason they would ever reform and they'd keep doing terrible shit.

Re: Redemption

(Anonymous) 2016-04-19 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Counterpoint: the redemption of a character doesn't mean the evil shit they did vanishes. This isn't Catholicism. You can't wipe sin away as though it never existed.

Unless, I mean, it's a particularly Catholic work or something.

Dr. Hilbert from Wolf 359. I don't want him to become everyone's friend*, but I want to see the slow transition that has already started to continue, and for him to go from the enemy of everyone's enemy to someone the rest of the "real" crew is shocked to discover that they genuinely trust.

*Okay, maybe I am totally on board for him developing a weird sort of friendship with Eiffel that maaaaybe turns into something else way down the road, but that goes into the 'in fic but not in canon' territory.

I'm not sure "redemption" is the right word, but I hope Shigaraki from Boku no Hero Academia gets out alive. It's implied that whatever happened when he first discovered his powers broke something deep inside him, and even when he's threatening to slaughter civilians at random, he comes off like a five-year-old throwing a tantrum. I think he needs help more than he needs punishment.

Basically any self-loathing, self aware characters who want to better.
