Oh god no. What you call it? Mary Sue Inc.?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh ffs, why does everyone throw "Mary Sue" at any thing they don't like as an insult? It's so dumb and that's part of why a lot of people consider the word meaningless now.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It can now accurately be translated as 'the show doesn't irrationally hate this character as much as I do'.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh I hate to say it don't make me say it oh god I'm going to say it

I really like the concept, but I think it would need to be done by someone other than Moffat (or a Moffat collaborator) to be any good. He's just too obsessed with over-engineered mysteries to do a good , and while I like the characters, I think Moffat and also Gattiss give into the temptation of pastiche too much with the dialogue (and with depictions of Victorian settings generally). You need a lighter touch, I think.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
His problem is over engineered mysteries that he doesn't bother to explain. That is why his Sherlock sucks, the Holmes canon is all about the explanation and Moffie doesn't think explanations matter as long as the mystery is cool enough to start with.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt - This. And the problem, is the mysteries aren't really cool enough on their own, figuring out the puzzle is the whole point. That's something you really shouldn't have to explain to anyone who wants to adapt Sherlock Holmes, but...

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Except one of the key differences to this version of Sherlock Holmes, aside from being contemporary, is it isn't a procedural. The mysteries are stage dressings for a 'Story about a detective.' (I'd also add it's the story of a man learning how to be a better, more human person, because that's really the through line of the entire series to date.)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Through line of everything Moffat ever wrote, in fact.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
THat is what we are complaining about. Sherlock is not the right franchise for that shit, and neither is Doctor Who for that matter.

The problem with Moffat is he won an award for a short story twenty years ago and has been recycling the same fucking plot from it for the rest of his career.

I think the problem with making an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes that isn't a procedural is that it seems to miss the point. It'd be like making a reboot of Batman where Bruce Wayne learns to paint instead of fighting crime. There's nothing wrong with painting, it's a lovely hobby. But that's not who Batman is or what he does.

I'm also not really seeing where it's a story about a man improving. I assume you mean Sherlock? The learning curve seems so subtle as to be nonexistent, to be honest. I'd say that the the whole "story of a man learning how to be a better, more human person" describes Elementary (who also manages to craft a decent procedural in the process), and not BBC Sherlock at all.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, in theory they were okay but their execution left something to be desired. As another anon pointed out I think I'd only go for it if Moffat weren't heading it.

But I found the characters obnoxious when he wrote them. :/

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The lizard lady's lizard make up is rather cartoony. It is very CBBC and not that great when compared even to Star Trek twenty years ago.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhhh, I don't know if that's fair. You could stick her in the background of any Star Trek TV series from TNG onwards and she wouldn't look at all out of place.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I really enjoyed their first appearence in AGMGTW, but when they appeared again in the Snowmen they just seemed... off to me. Vastra had lost her edge?

Then again, at least there's some very good fic to content oneself with.

I'd love it. A million times better than the idea of Coal Hill kids played by actors in their 30s.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Not loving that idea. It's almost Torchwood Mark 2, but for the kiddies.

[personal profile] firstmoonie 2016-04-23 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely not with those three, no.

I always thought that if you took the characters seriously, a series about these three could actually be a very wonderful examination of what it means to be Other, and to go against the ideals of your culture. All of them are doing it in different ways, right down to Strax the Sontaran nurse helping other species (what happens when his unit come to punish him for disgracing their race?). The Victorian setting seems well suited to such a theme, it could practically be Penny Dreadful for kids.

I'm still really, really excited for Class though. A TV show by Patrick Ness? We aren't even worthy.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a lot of makeup for regular roles. Ask Brent Stait about that, it's not fun.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If Andreas Katsulas and Andrew Robinson can manage it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-23 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP. I really wanted a spinoff with these three. I'm not so scited about Class, but I hope it'll be good.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched Who in a while now, but I could get very excited for a spin-off like this one. This, or one about Missy.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Please no. Like many other Moffat characters/ideas, they were fun for one episode, maybe two, and beyond that it's non-stop stupid obnoxiousness that usually warps around and starts contradicting earlier characterization. If we never see these three again, I'll be happy.

I like the concept, but best if Moffat isn't writing it.
